Background of the Study

Income disparity is a significant determinant of health outcomes, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children. Socioeconomic inequalities influence access to healthcare, nutrition, and living conditions, all of which contribute to the overall well-being of children. Families with higher income levels can afford better healthcare services, nutritious food, and safe living environments, whereas low-income households often struggle with limited access to these necessities (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024).

In Kwara State, where economic inequality persists, children from lower-income families are more susceptible to malnutrition, preventable diseases, and developmental delays. Access to quality healthcare services, including immunization, treatment for infections, and routine checkups, is often limited for children in impoverished households. Studies indicate that income disparity directly impacts infant mortality rates, childhood illnesses, and overall physical and cognitive development (United Nations Children’s Fund [UNICEF], 2024).

Despite ongoing government efforts to improve child healthcare services, disparities in income continue to widen health gaps between affluent and low-income households. This study aims to assess the extent to which income disparities influence child health outcomes in Kwara State and explore potential interventions to mitigate these inequalities.

Statement of the Problem

In Kwara State, significant differences in income levels contribute to disparities in child healthcare access and overall health outcomes. Children from wealthy households tend to have better nutrition, improved access to quality healthcare, and healthier living environments. Conversely, children from lower-income families face challenges such as poor nutrition, inadequate healthcare services, and higher exposure to disease-causing conditions.

Limited research has been conducted to quantify the direct relationship between income disparity and child health outcomes in Kwara State. Understanding these disparities is essential for policymakers to develop targeted interventions that promote equitable healthcare access and improve child health indicators.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the relationship between income disparity and child health outcomes in Kwara State.

  2. To identify the primary health challenges faced by children from low-income families.

  3. To evaluate existing policies and interventions aimed at reducing income-related health disparities among children.

Research Questions

  1. How does income disparity influence child health outcomes in Kwara State?

  2. What are the common health challenges faced by children from low-income households?

  3. What policy measures can be implemented to improve child healthcare access for low-income families?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher-income households are associated with better child health outcomes.

  2. Children from low-income families have a higher risk of malnutrition and preventable diseases.

  3. Government interventions can reduce health disparities among children from different income levels.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on children from different income groups in Kwara State, analyzing their health status and access to healthcare services. Limitations may include data collection challenges due to underreporting of income levels and healthcare access.

Definitions of Terms
