Background of the Study
Pregnancy, while a joyful event for many, can also bring significant physical, emotional, and psychological stress. The hormonal changes, physical discomforts, and concerns about childbirth can contribute to anxiety, depression, and stress during pregnancy (Anderson & Moore, 2023). In Nigeria, where access to mental health services is limited, many pregnant women struggle to manage stress, which can have serious implications for both maternal and fetal health. Poor stress management during pregnancy has been linked to increased rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and gestational hypertension (Olugbenga-Bello et al., 2023).
In response to the growing recognition of the psychological challenges pregnant women face, some states have initiated stress management programs to support maternal mental well-being. Gombe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has implemented various initiatives to provide emotional support, relaxation techniques, and counseling services to pregnant women. These programs often focus on promoting relaxation, reducing anxiety, and fostering positive coping mechanisms through activities such as yoga, guided breathing, and psychosocial support groups.
However, the effectiveness of these programs remains under-explored, with limited studies evaluating their impact on maternal stress levels and mental health. This study seeks to evaluate the current stress management programs available for pregnant women in Gombe State, assessing their effectiveness in reducing maternal stress and promoting overall well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Stress during pregnancy can negatively affect both the mother and the baby, leading to poor health outcomes. While stress management programs have been introduced in Gombe State to support pregnant women, there is insufficient data on how well these programs meet the mental health needs of participants. Many women continue to experience high levels of stress due to factors such as financial hardship, lack of emotional support, and healthcare barriers.
These stress management programs are often not standardized or evaluated rigorously, raising questions about their effectiveness in addressing the mental health challenges of pregnant women. There is a need for empirical research to assess the effectiveness of these interventions in improving maternal mental health outcomes and to explore potential improvements in program delivery.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of stress management programs for pregnant women in Gombe State in reducing stress levels.
To identify the factors contributing to stress among pregnant women in Gombe State.
To assess the perceived benefits of stress management programs on maternal mental health.
Research Questions
How effective are the existing stress management programs for pregnant women in Gombe State in reducing stress?
What are the key factors contributing to stress during pregnancy in Gombe State?
What are the perceived benefits of stress management programs for pregnant women in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
Stress management programs significantly reduce stress levels among pregnant women in Gombe State.
Pregnant women with access to stress management programs report better mental health outcomes compared to those without access.
Socio-economic factors, such as financial stress and lack of social support, significantly contribute to maternal stress during pregnancy.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on pregnant women who have participated in stress management programs in Gombe State. It will assess the effectiveness of these programs in reducing stress and improving maternal mental health. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate self-reported data and potential biases from participants with positive or negative experiences.
