Background of the Study

Economic hardship is a major determinant of maternal mental health, influencing stress levels, access to healthcare, and overall well-being during pregnancy and postpartum. Financial instability can lead to inadequate nutrition, poor healthcare access, and increased psychological distress, all of which contribute to maternal mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression (WHO, 2024). The financial strain on families, especially in low-income regions, exacerbates maternal stress, increasing the risk of negative pregnancy outcomes and long-term developmental challenges for children.

In Nigeria, and particularly in Yobe State, economic hardship has been intensified by factors such as insecurity, inflation, unemployment, and food scarcity. Many families struggle to meet basic needs, leaving pregnant and postpartum women vulnerable to stress-related illnesses (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). The burden of economic hardship is especially heavy on women, as they often bear the primary responsibility for household management and child-rearing. This economic strain, combined with limited mental health support, puts many women at risk of developing conditions such as postpartum depression (PDP) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Despite the significant impact of economic hardship on maternal mental health, little research has been conducted in Yobe State to assess the extent of this issue. Understanding the link between financial difficulties and maternal well-being is essential for developing effective support systems and mental health interventions. This study seeks to examine the impact of economic hardship on maternal mental health in Yobe State, with the goal of informing policies that can improve maternal healthcare and social support services.

Statement of the Problem

Maternal mental health issues remain largely unaddressed in Nigeria, particularly in economically disadvantaged regions like Yobe State. Economic hardship affects access to healthcare, nutrition, and emotional well-being, all of which are critical factors in a mother's mental health (Okafor et al., 2024). Many pregnant and postpartum women in Yobe State experience stress, anxiety, and depression due to financial instability, yet these issues are rarely diagnosed or treated.

The impact of economic hardship on maternal mental health is further complicated by the lack of mental health services in Yobe State. Many women cannot afford medical consultations, let alone specialized mental health care. Additionally, cultural stigma surrounding mental illness prevents many mothers from seeking help, exacerbating their emotional distress (Abdullahi & Yusuf, 2024). Without intervention, the cycle of poverty and poor maternal mental health will continue, negatively affecting not only mothers but also their children’s development.

This study aims to evaluate the relationship between economic hardship and maternal mental health in Yobe State, identifying the specific financial challenges faced by mothers and the psychological impact of these struggles. The findings will contribute to strategies for improving maternal mental healthcare and financial support systems.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of maternal mental health disorders among women facing economic hardship in Yobe State.

  2. To examine the specific financial challenges that contribute to maternal stress, anxiety, and depression.

  3. To explore potential interventions that can mitigate the effects of economic hardship on maternal mental health.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of maternal mental health disorders among women experiencing economic hardship in Yobe State?

  2. How do financial challenges contribute to maternal stress, anxiety, and depression?

  3. What interventions can help mitigate the effects of economic hardship on maternal mental health?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Economic hardship is significantly associated with higher levels of maternal mental health disorders.

  2. Women facing financial difficulties experience higher stress and anxiety compared to those with stable economic conditions.

  3. Financial and social support interventions improve maternal mental health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on pregnant and postpartum women in Yobe State who are experiencing financial hardship. It will assess their mental health status and explore the financial challenges contributing to their stress. Limitations may include reluctance to disclose personal financial struggles and potential bias in self-reported data.
