Background of the Study

Family planning counseling is an essential component of reproductive health services, helping individuals and couples make informed decisions regarding contraception and childbearing. Effective family planning counseling services have been associated with increased contraceptive uptake, reduced unintended pregnancies, and improved maternal and child health outcomes (WHO, 2024). Primary healthcare centers (PHCs) play a crucial role in delivering these services, particularly in low-resource settings where they serve as the first point of contact for many women seeking reproductive healthcare.

In Nigeria, family planning remains a public health priority due to its implications for maternal health, economic development, and population control. Despite efforts by the government and non-governmental organizations to promote family planning services, utilization remains low in many regions, including Plateau State. While some studies suggest that the availability of family planning counseling in PHCs has increased, the quality and effectiveness of these services remain uncertain (Adebayo et al., 2023). Issues such as inadequate staffing, limited training of healthcare providers, lack of privacy, and cultural and religious opposition may hinder the effectiveness of counseling services.

Plateau State is a diverse region with a mix of urban and rural populations, making it an important case study for evaluating the effectiveness of family planning counseling services. Understanding the quality, accessibility, and impact of family planning counseling in PHCs can provide valuable insights into the challenges and gaps within the healthcare system. This study seeks to evaluate family planning counseling services in PHCs in Plateau State, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of family planning counseling services in PHCs, contraceptive use in Plateau State remains relatively low. Many women and couples do not fully utilize these services, leading to high rates of unintended pregnancies and maternal health complications. Previous research suggests that gaps in service delivery, such as inadequate counseling sessions, misinformation, and socio-cultural barriers, contribute to low contraceptive uptake (Okonjo et al., 2024). Additionally, the quality of counseling may vary significantly between healthcare centers, with some facilities lacking trained personnel to provide comprehensive and client-centered counseling services.

The lack of an in-depth assessment of family planning counseling services in Plateau State creates a knowledge gap that this study seeks to address. By evaluating the effectiveness, accessibility, and challenges of these services, this research will provide evidence-based recommendations to enhance reproductive health interventions in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the quality and effectiveness of family planning counseling services in PHCs in Plateau State.

  2. To examine the challenges faced by healthcare providers in delivering family planning counseling services.

  3. To evaluate the impact of family planning counseling on contraceptive uptake in Plateau State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the quality and effectiveness of family planning counseling services in PHCs in Plateau State?

  2. What challenges do healthcare providers face in delivering family planning counseling services?

  3. How does family planning counseling impact contraceptive uptake among women in Plateau State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The quality of family planning counseling services significantly influences contraceptive uptake in Plateau State.

  2. Healthcare provider training is positively correlated with the effectiveness of family planning counseling.

  3. Socio-cultural factors significantly affect the accessibility and utilization of family planning counseling services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on selected PHCs in Plateau State, assessing family planning counseling services from the perspectives of both healthcare providers and clients. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining accurate data due to social desirability bias in responses and the exclusion of private healthcare facilities, which may offer alternative counseling services.

Definitions of Terms

  • Primary healthcare centers (PHCs): Community-based health facilities that provide essential health services, including family planning.
