Background of the Study

Religious beliefs play a significant role in shaping attitudes toward mental health care and policy acceptance in many societies. In Nigeria, where religion is deeply embedded in daily life, perspectives on mental health are often influenced by religious doctrines and cultural practices. While some religious institutions support medical interventions for mental illnesses, others attribute mental health conditions to supernatural causes, advocating for faith-based healing rather than medical treatment.

In Kebbi State, where Islam and Christianity are the dominant religions, religious leaders and institutions significantly influence health-seeking behaviors. Many individuals facing mental health challenges first seek help from religious centers rather than psychiatric professionals. This reliance on spiritual solutions affects the acceptance and implementation of mental health policies aimed at improving psychiatric care.

This study aims to examine the role of religious beliefs in mental health policy acceptance in Kebbi State, assessing whether religious perspectives facilitate or hinder the adoption of formal mental health services.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to integrate mental health services into Nigeria’s healthcare system, policy acceptance remains a challenge in some regions. In Kebbi State, many individuals rely on religious healing methods, leading to delays in seeking psychiatric care. This religious influence impacts the successful implementation of mental health policies, as misconceptions about mental illness persist.

This study seeks to explore how religious beliefs affect mental health policy acceptance in Kebbi State and to propose strategies for aligning religious perspectives with modern psychiatric care.

  1. To assess the influence of religious beliefs on mental health policy acceptance in Kebbi State.

  2. To examine the role of religious leaders in shaping public attitudes toward mental health care.

  3. To propose strategies for integrating religious perspectives into mental health policy advocacy.

Research Questions

  1. How do religious beliefs influence mental health policy acceptance in Kebbi State?

  2. What role do religious leaders play in shaping mental health attitudes and behaviors?

  3. How can religious perspectives be integrated into mental health policy advocacy?
