Background of the Study

Occupational health and safety (OHS) training is a critical component in promoting workplace safety and ensuring that employees adhere to safety protocols. Effective OHS training programs educate workers on hazard recognition, safe work practices, and emergency response procedures (Okafor & Yusuf, 2024). Research indicates that workplaces with well-structured safety training programs experience fewer accidents and higher compliance with safety regulations (Adebayo, 2023).

In Taraba State, various industries, including construction, manufacturing, and agriculture, expose workers to occupational hazards. However, despite existing safety regulations, workplace accidents remain prevalent, raising concerns about whether workers receive adequate safety training. This study examines the impact of OHS training on workers' compliance with safety regulations in Taraba State.

Statement of the Problem

Workplace accidents continue to occur in many industries in Taraba State, despite the implementation of safety policies. One possible reason for this is the lack of effective OHS training, which may result in poor compliance with safety regulations (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Many employees are unaware of workplace hazards and do not take necessary precautions, leading to increased injury rates.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of OHS training in improving workers' compliance with safety standards, identifying gaps in training programs, and recommending strategies for enhancement.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the availability and implementation of OHS training programs in Taraba State.

2. To examine the relationship between OHS training and workers’ compliance with safety regulations.

3. To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of OHS training programs.

Research Questions

1. How frequently are OHS training programs conducted in workplaces in Taraba State?

2. What is the relationship between OHS training and workers’ compliance with safety regulations?

3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of OHS training programs?

Research Hypotheses

1. Employees who receive regular OHS training are more likely to comply with workplace safety regulations.

2. There is a positive correlation between OHS training and a reduction in workplace accidents.

3. The lack of proper OHS training programs contributes to poor compliance with safety measures.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on selected industries in Taraba State, evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of OHS training programs. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining accurate records on training programs and compliance rates.
