Background of the Study

Occupational lung diseases are a major concern for workers exposed to airborne pollutants in industrial and manufacturing settings. Sawmill workers, in particular, are at high risk due to prolonged exposure to wood dust, which contains harmful particles that can lead to respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and lung fibrosis (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).

Katsina State has a significant number of sawmill industries where workers are exposed to fine wood particles, chemicals, and other respiratory hazards. Many sawmill workers do not use personal protective equipment (PPE) or work in poorly ventilated environments, increasing their risk of developing occupational lung diseases (Bello & Musa, 2024). Despite the growing concern, there is limited research assessing the prevalence and impact of occupational lung diseases among sawmill workers in Katsina State. This study seeks to evaluate the respiratory health of sawmill workers, identify risk factors, and propose strategies for preventing occupational lung diseases.

Statement of the Problem

Sawmill workers are constantly exposed to wood dust and other airborne pollutants, which can cause serious respiratory conditions. Prolonged inhalation of these substances can lead to chronic respiratory illnesses, reduced lung function, and increased mortality rates (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023). In Katsina State, many sawmill workers operate in hazardous conditions without adequate respiratory protection or safety regulations.

Despite the well-documented risks of wood dust exposure, there is a lack of specific research on the prevalence and severity of occupational lung diseases among sawmill workers in Katsina State. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the respiratory health of workers, evaluating safety measures, and recommending strategies for reducing exposure to hazardous airborne particles.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence of occupational lung diseases among sawmill workers in Katsina State.

2. To identify risk factors contributing to respiratory illnesses among sawmill workers.

3. To recommend measures for reducing exposure to wood dust and improving respiratory health.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of occupational lung diseases among sawmill workers in Katsina State?

2. What are the major risk factors for respiratory illnesses in sawmill workers?

3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the risk of occupational lung diseases in sawmills?

Research Hypotheses

1. Sawmill workers in Katsina State have a high prevalence of occupational lung diseases due to wood dust exposure.

2. Prolonged exposure to wood dust significantly increases the risk of respiratory illnesses.

3. Implementing safety measures such as PPE usage and improved ventilation can reduce the incidence of occupational lung diseases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on sawmill workers in Katsina State, assessing their respiratory health and work environments. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining medical records and variations in individual respiratory health conditions.

Definitions of Terms

• Occupational Lung Disease: A group of respiratory illnesses caused by exposure to harmful substances in the workplace.

• Wood Dust: Fine particles generated during wood processing, which can be inhaled and cause respiratory problems.

• Respiratory Protection: Safety measures, such as masks and ventilation systems, used to reduce exposure to airborne pollutants.

• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): A long-term lung disease that obstructs airflow and causes breathing difficulties.
