Background of the Study

Climate change has led to increased global temperatures, with extreme heat becoming a major occupational hazard for outdoor workers, particularly those in the agricultural sector. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause heat stress, dehydration, and reduced work performance, ultimately affecting crop yield and productivity (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).

Kaduna State, known for its agricultural activities, experiences high temperatures, especially during the dry season. Many farmworkers engage in physically demanding tasks under extreme heat conditions with limited access to cooling measures or hydration facilities. Studies show that heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke and exhaustion, are common among agricultural workers (Bello & Salisu, 2024).

This study aims to assess the impact of extreme heat on agricultural workers in Kaduna State, examining the physiological effects, work efficiency, and possible adaptation strategies to mitigate heat-related health risks.

Statement of the Problem

Extreme heat conditions pose significant health and productivity risks for agricultural workers. Heat stress can lead to reduced physical endurance, fatigue, and an increased likelihood of workplace accidents. In Kaduna State, agricultural workers often lack protective measures such as shaded workspaces, hydration programs, and proper rest schedules. As a result, many suffer from heat-related illnesses, which can impact food production and economic stability (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023).

Despite the growing concern about climate change and occupational health, limited research has focused on how extreme heat affects agricultural workers in Kaduna State. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the direct impact of extreme heat on worker health and productivity, identifying risk factors, and proposing preventive strategies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the health effects of extreme heat on agricultural workers in Kaduna State.

2. To evaluate the impact of heat stress on work performance and productivity.

3. To recommend strategies for mitigating the adverse effects of extreme heat on agricultural workers.

Research Questions

1. What are the health risks associated with extreme heat exposure among agricultural workers in Kaduna State?

2. How does extreme heat affect agricultural productivity and worker efficiency?

3. What adaptive strategies can help mitigate the impact of extreme heat on agricultural workers?

Research Hypotheses

1. Extreme heat exposure significantly increases health risks among agricultural workers in Kaduna State.

2. High temperatures negatively impact agricultural productivity and worker efficiency.

3. Implementing cooling measures and hydration programs can reduce the adverse effects of extreme heat on agricultural workers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on agricultural workers in Kaduna State, particularly those working in outdoor farming environments. Limitations may include variations in heat tolerance among individuals and difficulty in obtaining accurate health data from workers.

Definitions of Terms

• Extreme Heat: High temperatures that exceed normal working conditions and pose health risks.

• Heat Stress: A condition caused by excessive heat exposure, leading to dehydration and fatigue.

• Agricultural Productivity: The efficiency and output of farm labor in relation to climatic conditions.

• Adaptation Strategies: Measures taken to reduce the impact of heat on workers, such as hydration and cooling techniques.
