Background of the Study

COVID-19 is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets, making workplaces high-risk environments for virus spread. Occupational settings such as healthcare facilities, factories, and offices require close human interaction, increasing exposure risks (Bello & Musa, 2023). Effective mitigation strategies, including personal protective equipment (PPE), social distancing, and hygiene measures, are crucial in reducing occupational transmission.

In Taraba State, various occupational groups faced different levels of exposure. Healthcare workers, teachers, factory workers, and transport operators were particularly vulnerable due to their work environments (Salisu & Ibrahim, 2024). While some workplaces implemented strict preventive measures, others struggled with inadequate resources and non-compliance, leading to increased infection rates.

This study aims to investigate the occupational transmission risks of COVID-19 in Taraba State, assessing workplace safety measures, risk levels among different professions, and strategies to enhance workplace health protections.

Statement of the Problem

Workplaces are critical points for the transmission of infectious diseases, including COVID-19. Despite guidelines for workplace safety, compliance levels varied across industries, leading to differing transmission rates. Healthcare workers and public-facing employees were particularly at risk, yet the effectiveness of workplace interventions remains unclear.

Limited research has been conducted on occupational transmission risks in Taraba State. Understanding which occupational groups faced the highest exposure and how preventive measures were implemented can help improve workplace health policies for future pandemics. This study seeks to bridge this knowledge gap and recommend ways to minimize occupational health risks.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess occupational transmission risks of COVID-19 in various workplaces in Taraba State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of workplace safety measures in reducing transmission.

3. To propose strategies for improving occupational health protections in future pandemics.

Research Questions

1. Which occupational groups faced the highest COVID-19 transmission risks in Taraba State?

2. How effective were workplace safety measures in reducing COVID-19 spread?

3. What improvements can be made to occupational health policies for future pandemics?

Research Hypotheses

1. Certain occupational groups in Taraba State experienced significantly higher COVID-19 transmission risks.

2. Workplaces with strict safety measures reported lower transmission rates.

3. Improved compliance with workplace health protocols can significantly reduce occupational transmission risks.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on various industries in Taraba State, including healthcare, manufacturing, and public services. It will examine workplace infection data and safety protocols. Limitations may include inconsistencies in workplace compliance and variations in data availability.

Definitions of Terms

• Occupational Transmission: The spread of infectious diseases within workplace settings.

• Workplace Safety Measures: Policies and practices designed to prevent disease transmission in work environments.

• High-Risk Occupations: Jobs with frequent human interaction that increase exposure to infectious diseases.

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Clothing and gear used to minimize exposure to health hazards.
