Background of the Study
As the digital world becomes increasingly interconnected, the security of sensitive data, such as emails, has become a critical concern. Federal University, Lafia, in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, faces challenges in securing its email communications against cyber-attacks, including man-in-the-middle attacks, phishing, and data breaches. Traditional encryption methods, such as RSA and AES, have vulnerabilities that can be exploited by quantum computers in the future. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) offers a revolutionary solution to these challenges. QKD leverages the principles of quantum mechanics, particularly quantum entanglement and the no-cloning theorem, to secure communication channels. By ensuring that any attempt to eavesdrop on the communication will alter the message and be detected, QKD offers a level of security that classical encryption cannot match. This study aims to investigate the application of QKD in securing the email communication system of Federal University, Lafia, as an exploration of its potential for enhancing email security in the context of higher education.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lafia, like many other universities, faces increasing threats to the security of its email communication systems. The traditional encryption methods used to secure emails are susceptible to future quantum computing breakthroughs that could potentially break existing cryptographic protocols. There is an urgent need to explore and implement more advanced quantum encryption techniques, such as QKD, to safeguard sensitive academic and administrative communications.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the application of quantum key distribution for securing email communication at Federal University, Lafia.
  2. To design a prototype QKD-based email system for the university.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of QKD in preventing cyber-attacks and ensuring secure email communication at the university.

Research Questions

  1. How can quantum key distribution be applied to secure email communications at Federal University, Lafia?
  2. What are the key challenges in implementing QKD-based email security systems at Federal University, Lafia?
  3. How effective is QKD in securing university email systems compared to traditional encryption methods?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of QKD will significantly improve the security of email communication at Federal University, Lafia.
  2. QKD-based email systems will offer better protection against quantum computing-based attacks than traditional encryption systems.
  3. Students and staff at Federal University, Lafia will experience enhanced security in email communication through the use of QKD.

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the exploration and implementation of quantum key distribution as a solution for email security at Federal University, Lafia. By securing sensitive communications, the study will help protect academic, research, and administrative data from cyber-attacks. The findings will also provide valuable insights into the practical applications of quantum computing in university-level cybersecurity.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the application of quantum key distribution to secure email systems at Federal University, Lafia, located in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State. The research will not address other cybersecurity concerns beyond email communication.

Definitions of Terms
Quantum Key Distribution: A method of secure communication based on quantum mechanics, which ensures that any eavesdropping attempt will be detected.
Cyber-Attacks: Malicious activities aimed at disrupting or compromising the integrity of digital information.
Email Security: The protection of email accounts, messages, and content from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
