Background of the Study
Attendance monitoring is an essential part of academic administration in universities. Traditional methods, such as manual attendance sheets or sign-in logs, are often prone to errors, fraud, and inefficiencies. Federal University, Gashua, located in Bade LGA, Yobe State, currently relies on conventional methods to track student attendance. These methods are time-consuming and can be easily manipulated. With advancements in facial recognition technology, an automated attendance monitoring system can be developed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of attendance tracking. Face recognition-based attendance systems offer several advantages, such as real-time processing, improved accuracy, and reduced administrative burden. This study will explore the design and implementation of an automated attendance monitoring system using face recognition at Federal University, Gashua.

Statement of the Problem
The current manual attendance system at Federal University, Gashua, faces several challenges, including the possibility of proxy attendance, human errors, and delays in attendance recording. This reduces the effectiveness of the attendance system and hampers the accuracy of academic records. The reliance on physical attendance logs or paper-based systems makes the process vulnerable to manipulation, which can impact the integrity of the academic process. To address these issues, the university needs a more reliable and efficient solution for monitoring student attendance.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement a face recognition-based automated attendance monitoring system for Federal University, Gashua.
  2. To evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of the face recognition-based attendance system in tracking student attendance.
  3. To assess the impact of the automated system on reducing administrative overhead and improving attendance accuracy.

Research Questions

  1. How accurate and efficient is the face recognition-based attendance system at Federal University, Gashua?
  2. How does the implementation of the automated attendance system impact the administrative workload?
  3. What are the challenges and limitations of using face recognition technology for attendance monitoring?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The face recognition-based attendance system will be more accurate and efficient than traditional manual attendance methods.
  2. The implementation of the automated system will significantly reduce the administrative workload associated with attendance tracking.
  3. The automated attendance system will reduce instances of proxy attendance.

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the development of more efficient and secure attendance monitoring systems in Nigerian universities, particularly at Federal University, Gashua. The findings will help the institution enhance the accuracy of attendance tracking, reduce administrative tasks, and improve the overall efficiency of academic management. Additionally, the study will provide a foundation for the wider adoption of face recognition technology in higher education institutions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of an automated attendance monitoring system using face recognition at Federal University, Gashua, within Bade LGA, Yobe State. It will not extend to the development of other types of attendance systems beyond face recognition.

Definitions of Terms
Automated Attendance System: A system that records student attendance automatically using technological methods, such as biometric recognition.
Face Recognition Technology: A biometric system that identifies individuals based on their facial features.
Proxy Attendance: The act of someone else marking attendance on behalf of another person.
