Background of the Study
The role of university lecturers has evolved significantly in recent years, with increasing demands for them to manage large classes, provide individualized feedback, and engage in research activities. The rapid expansion of higher education and the rise of online learning platforms have further complicated the lecturer's workload. As a result, there is a growing interest in AI-based solutions that can assist lecturers in managing their responsibilities more effectively.

An AI-based virtual teaching assistant (VTA) can automate routine tasks, such as grading assignments, answering frequently asked questions, and providing personalized feedback to students. By integrating AI technologies like natural language processing, machine learning, and chatbots, universities can develop systems that complement the work of lecturers and enhance the learning experience for students. The VTA can also assist with administrative tasks, such as tracking student progress and managing course materials, allowing lecturers to focus on more complex teaching tasks.

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, located in Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, is interested in exploring the potential of an AI-based virtual teaching assistant to support its lecturers. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of such a system, focusing on how it can improve lecturer efficiency and student engagement.

Statement of the Problem
Lecturers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University face increasing workloads due to large class sizes, administrative tasks, and the need for personalized student interaction. Traditional methods of managing these tasks are time-consuming and often ineffective. An AI-based virtual teaching assistant could automate many of these tasks, but the potential benefits and challenges of such a system in the Nigerian university context remain underexplored. This study seeks to address this gap by developing and evaluating a VTA system at ATBU.

Objectives of the Study

1. To develop an AI-based virtual teaching assistant for lecturers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University.

2. To assess the impact of the VTA on lecturer efficiency and workload reduction.

3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the VTA in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes.

Research Questions

1. How effective is the AI-based virtual teaching assistant in assisting lecturers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University?

2. What impact does the VTA have on lecturer workload and administrative efficiency?

3. How does the VTA contribute to student engagement and learning outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

1. The AI-based virtual teaching assistant will significantly reduce the workload of lecturers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University.

2. The VTA will improve administrative efficiency and task management for lecturers.

3. The VTA will enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in courses supported by the system.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the application of AI in teaching and learning, particularly in the context of Nigerian universities. By developing and evaluating an AI-based virtual teaching assistant, the research will offer a scalable solution to the growing challenges faced by lecturers in higher education. The findings will contribute to the broader discussion on the role of AI in enhancing the efficiency of teaching and improving student outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the development and evaluation of an AI-based virtual teaching assistant for lecturers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, located in Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. The research will assess the impact of the system on lecturer efficiency, workload, and student engagement. Limitations include the potential resistance to AI adoption by lecturers and the need for adequate training in using the new system.
