Background of the Study
Labor unions play a crucial role in advocating for the rights and well-being of workers, particularly in the area of occupational health and safety. In many developing regions, workers often face hazardous working conditions, and labor unions are instrumental in promoting workplace safety and securing workers’ rights to health protections. In Benue State, a significant portion of the workforce is employed in agriculture, construction, and manufacturing—sectors prone to high-risk occupational hazards. Labor unions in the region, including those representing agricultural and industrial workers, are expected to serve as key agents in addressing these hazards and pushing for improved health conditions at the workplace (Adewale & Ahmed, 2023).
The advocacy of labor unions for occupational health rights is essential to reducing workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Research has shown that effective labor union engagement leads to better enforcement of occupational health regulations, increased awareness of workers' rights, and the development of policies that protect workers' health (Ogunleye & Salisu, 2024). In Benue State, however, there has been limited empirical research on the extent of labor union advocacy for occupational health rights and its impact on workplace conditions.
This study aims to assess the role of labor unions in advocating for occupational health rights in Benue State, examining their strategies, challenges, and success stories. Understanding the effectiveness of union efforts will provide insights into the broader issue of occupational health in the state and suggest ways to enhance union involvement in advocating for better working conditions.
Statement of the Problem
Labor unions are essential in ensuring that workers' health rights are protected, but the extent of their effectiveness in Benue State remains unclear. Despite the presence of several unions, workplace health hazards continue to affect workers in key sectors such as agriculture and construction. Many workers lack awareness of their occupational health rights, and labor unions often face challenges such as limited resources, weak legal frameworks, and employer resistance in advocating for these rights.
The lack of significant progress in improving occupational health standards raises concerns about the role and capacity of labor unions to influence change. This study seeks to evaluate labor union advocacy for occupational health rights, identify the barriers to effective advocacy, and propose recommendations for strengthening labor unions’ role in improving occupational health conditions in Benue State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of labor unions in advocating for occupational health rights in Benue State.
2. To identify the challenges faced by labor unions in promoting occupational health rights.
3. To recommend strategies to improve labor union advocacy for better occupational health standards.
Research Questions
1. How effective are labor unions in advocating for occupational health rights in Benue State?

3. What strategies can labor unions implement to enhance their advocacy for occupational health rights?
Research Hypotheses
1. Strong labor union advocacy leads to improved occupational health conditions in the workplace.
2. Labor unions face significant challenges, including limited resources, that hinder their advocacy for occupational health rights.
3. Increased union involvement in occupational health issues reduces workplace accidents and health-related risks.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on labor unions representing workers in sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and construction in Benue State. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing union leaders and workers due to union dynamics and possible reluctance to discuss challenges openly.

• Occupational Health Rights: Legal and moral entitlements to safe working conditions, access to health services, and protection from workplace hazards.
