BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
A body of knowledge that is defined by objective observation and methodical experimentation is called a scientific discipline. The scientific content is the same throughout all educational levels and in every country in the globe, but the curricula are different. Because a solid groundwork is necessary for success in any endeavor undertaken by humans, it is imperative that educational institutions place a strong emphasis on the study of fundamental scientific principles. Primary education, as stated by Momoh (2020), is the groundwork for formal education and serves as the support structure for the future stages of a country's educational system.
In the Nigerian national policy on education (2015), it was stated that school education should "equip students to live attentively in our modern age of Basic science." In accordance with this aim of education, Boge (2017) has the following to say: "in an era that is most accurately described by its social and religious process, one major educational problem is preparing the young people to cope with the intellectual and religious environment that is characterized by rapid changes." In order for the Nigerian education system to be successful, it is necessary for students to
Basic science has continued to occupy its separate place and some time, it is often neglected in some schools even where the various branches of Basic science are taught they are done without regard for the basic requirement needed in spite of the effort made during the present decade by the federal and state government of Nigeria to give Basic sc. the attention it deserves, Experimental Basic Science is one of the most recently included subject contents of the curriculum Basic science it inclusion, Basic science has continued to occupy its separate place and some time, it is one of the most recently included. Therefore the study seeks to examine the importance, problems and prospects in the teaching and learning of basic science in Nnewi north LGA.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
This research was carried out in an effort to identify the challenges that prevent effective teaching and learning of fundamental science in secondary schools and to provide potential solutions to those challenges. Standards have been developed for the teaching and learning of fundamental science, and instructors of science need to adhere to these standards for their pupils to gain successful learning. Despite the fact that the government has made significant investments in the field of scientific education, there are several issues that continue to plague our educational institutions. The lack of trained instructors in many of our secondary schools, especially those located in rural communities, was brought to our attention by Agun and Imogie (2018). This will invariably have an effect on the use of instructional materials in the teaching and learning activities because (a) the student population may be significantly larger and (b) an incompetent teacher who is lacking in pedagogical skills may not be able to utilize the materials effectively even when they are available. Moa Dowell (2019) researched the state of scientific education in Nigerian secondary schools and published her findings. His research was limited to the nine states that were not located in any of the conflict zones. The purpose of the survey was to investigate several important facets of scientific education in secondary schools, including but not limited to: instructors, support facilities and equipment text book, chemicals prepared slides, community resources, and innovative to teachers. His research led him to the following findings: that a significant proportion of science instructors lack formal education, and that there is an alarming exodus of teachers from certain schools in search of "better jobs." In light of the information presented above, it is imperative that a fresh assessment be conducted in order to determine whether or not there has been a discernible increase in the number of trained instructors and relevant resources that are readily available. Hence, the study examines the importance, problems and prospects in the teaching and learning of basic science in Nnewi North LGA.
