Background of the Study
Hearing-impaired students face significant challenges in traditional classroom settings, particularly in lecture-based courses, where auditory information is essential for learning. Real-time lecture transcription offers a potential solution by converting spoken language into written text, allowing students with hearing impairments to access lecture content in real time. AI-based real-time transcription systems, which utilize natural language processing (NLP) and speech recognition technologies, have shown promise in providing accurate and efficient transcription services. These AI-driven systems can transcribe spoken words into text, offering real-time support for students with hearing impairments during lectures.

At Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, the inclusion of hearing-impaired students in mainstream classrooms is essential to ensuring equal access to education. However, despite the importance of inclusive education, the availability of real-time transcription services remains limited. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of AI-based real-time lecture transcription in supporting hearing-impaired students at Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, thereby improving their learning experience and academic outcomes.

Statement of the Problem
Hearing-impaired students at Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, face challenges in accessing course content delivered through lectures due to the lack of real-time transcription services. The absence of AI-based real-time transcription systems in classrooms exacerbates these challenges, leading to difficulties in following lectures and understanding the material. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the feasibility and effectiveness of AI-based real-time lecture transcription systems for hearing-impaired students.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement an AI-based real-time lecture transcription system for hearing-impaired students at Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of AI-based real-time transcription in enhancing learning experiences for hearing-impaired students.
  3. To evaluate the challenges and opportunities of integrating AI-based real-time transcription systems in Nigerian educational institutions.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is AI-based real-time transcription in enhancing the learning experience of hearing-impaired students at Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda?
  2. What challenges do hearing-impaired students face when using AI-based real-time transcription systems during lectures?
  3. What are the potential benefits and limitations of integrating AI-based real-time transcription systems into the educational framework of Nigerian polytechnics?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based real-time transcription significantly improves the learning experience and academic performance of hearing-impaired students at Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda.
  2. Hearing-impaired students face fewer learning challenges when AI-based real-time transcription systems are used during lectures.
  3. The implementation of AI-based real-time transcription systems in Nigerian educational institutions faces challenges related to technology integration, training, and system reliability.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the use of AI-based real-time transcription systems for inclusive education, particularly for hearing-impaired students at Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda. By evaluating the system’s effectiveness and addressing implementation challenges, the research will contribute to improving accessibility and learning outcomes for students with disabilities in Nigerian polytechnics.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of an AI-based real-time lecture transcription system for hearing-impaired students at Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State. The study will be limited to this institution and may not be generalizable to other institutions in Nigeria. Additionally, the research will focus on specific courses and challenges faced by hearing-impaired students within the polytechnic environment.
