Background of the Study

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), also known as nosocomial infections, are a major concern in healthcare settings worldwide, including in Kogi State, Nigeria (Ojo & Yusuf, 2024). These infections occur in patients receiving medical treatment and can lead to prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and higher mortality rates (Aliyu et al., 2023). Proper nutrition plays a vital role in preventing HAIs by strengthening the immune system and promoting faster recovery (Bello et al., 2024).

Nutritional interventions such as protein supplementation, micronutrient fortification, and enteral nutrition support have been linked to reduced infection rates and improved patient outcomes (Ahmed & Musa, 2024). However, in Kogi State, limited awareness and inadequate hospital nutrition programs may hinder the effectiveness of these interventions. This study appraises the impact of nutritional strategies on reducing HAIs and improving patient health outcomes in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to improve hospital sanitation and infection control measures, HAIs remain prevalent in healthcare facilities in Kogi State. Malnourished patients are particularly vulnerable to infections due to weakened immune responses. However, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of nutritional interventions in reducing HAIs in local hospitals. This study aims to bridge this gap by evaluating the role of proper nutrition in preventing and managing HAIs in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of nutritional interventions on the incidence of hospital-acquired infections in Kogi State.

  2. To identify key nutrients that enhance immune function and infection resistance in hospitalized patients.

  3. To recommend nutritional strategies for reducing hospital-acquired infections.

Research Questions

  1. How do nutritional interventions influence the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections in Kogi State?

  2. What are the essential nutrients required to strengthen the immune response against infections?

  3. What hospital nutrition programs can be implemented to reduce HAIs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nutritional interventions significantly reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections.

  2. Deficiencies in key nutrients increase the risk of infections in hospitalized patients.

  3. Implementing structured hospital nutrition programs lowers the prevalence of HAIs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on hospitals in Kogi State, evaluating the impact of nutrition on infection rates. Limitations include differences in hospital facilities, variations in patient dietary adherence, and limited access to comprehensive nutritional data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs): Infections that develop in patients during their stay in a healthcare facility.

  • Nutritional Interventions: Strategies aimed at improving dietary intake to enhance health outcomes.

  • Immune Function: The body's ability to fight infections through immune responses.
