Background of the Study

Dietary choices among the elderly are influenced by various social and economic factors, which can significantly impact their overall health and well-being (Adamu & Yusuf, 2024). Aging is often accompanied by changes in food preferences, reduced income, and a decline in social interactions, all of which can affect access to a nutritious diet (Olawale et al., 2023). In Plateau State, economic disparities, cultural practices, and limited access to healthcare further contribute to dietary inadequacies among older adults.

Older individuals with low socioeconomic status may struggle to afford nutrient-rich foods, leading to deficiencies in essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins, and minerals (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, social factors such as family support, community engagement, and traditional dietary practices influence the types of foods consumed. This study aims to examine how these factors shape the dietary choices of the elderly in Plateau State and their implications for health.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of proper nutrition in aging, many elderly individuals in Plateau State face barriers to maintaining a healthy diet. Economic constraints, limited access to fresh foods, and social isolation contribute to poor dietary habits, increasing the risk of malnutrition and chronic diseases. However, there is a lack of research on how these social and economic factors directly impact dietary choices among older adults in the region. This study seeks to bridge this gap by identifying key determinants of elderly dietary habits and proposing strategies to improve their nutritional intake.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of economic status on the dietary choices of the elderly in Plateau State.

  2. To evaluate the role of social support and family dynamics in shaping elderly dietary habits.

  3. To explore policy interventions that can improve access to nutritious food for the elderly.

Research Questions

  1. How does economic status influence dietary choices among the elderly in Plateau State?

  2. What social factors affect food selection and eating habits among older adults?

  3. What policies or programs can improve nutrition accessibility for the elderly?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Economic constraints significantly limit access to nutritious food among the elderly.

  2. Social support and family interactions positively influence elderly dietary choices.

  3. Policy interventions can improve the nutritional well-being of older adults.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on elderly individuals in Plateau State, examining the social and economic factors affecting their dietary choices. Limitations include potential self-reporting biases in dietary assessments and variations in food availability across different localities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Dietary Choices: The selection of foods based on availability, preference, and affordability.

  • Social Factors: Aspects such as family support, cultural influences, and social networks that impact behavior.

  • Economic Factors: Financial conditions that affect food affordability and accessibility.
