Background of the Study

Sugar consumption has increased significantly worldwide, with processed foods and sugary beverages becoming a staple in many diets. Research has shown that excessive sugar intake is linked to various metabolic and psychological disorders, including stress, anxiety, and depression (Adeyemi et al., 2024). High sugar consumption disrupts the body’s hormonal balance, leading to spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, which can exacerbate mood disorders (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023).

In Plateau State, dietary patterns are shifting due to urbanization, with many individuals consuming large amounts of sugary beverages, snacks, and processed foods. This study aims to explore the impact of high sugar intake on stress levels and mood disorders among residents of Plateau State, providing insight into the need for dietary modifications.

Statement of the Problem

Despite growing concerns about mental health and diet, limited research exists on how high sugar consumption affects stress and mood disorders in Plateau State. Many individuals consume high-sugar diets without realizing their impact on psychological well-being. Understanding the relationship between sugar intake and mood disorders is crucial for developing dietary interventions to promote mental health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of sugar consumption among residents of Plateau State.

  2. To examine the relationship between high sugar intake and stress levels.

  3. To evaluate the impact of sugar reduction on mood stability and mental well-being.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common sources of high sugar intake among residents of Plateau State?

  2. How does excessive sugar consumption influence stress and mood disorders?

  3. Can reducing sugar intake improve mental health outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. High sugar intake is significantly associated with increased stress and mood disorders.

  2. Individuals who consume less sugar experience lower levels of anxiety and depression.

  3. Reducing sugar intake leads to improved mood stability and psychological well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the dietary habits of individuals in Plateau State, particularly their sugar consumption and mental health status. Limitations include self-reported dietary data and other external factors influencing stress and mood disorders.

Definitions of Terms

  • Sugar Intake: The consumption of sugar from foods and beverages, including refined sugars and natural sweeteners.

  • Mood Disorders: Psychological conditions that affect emotional states, including depression and anxiety.

  • Stress: The body's response to physical, mental, or emotional pressure.
