Background of the Study

The Fulani people, one of the largest ethnic groups in West Africa, have distinct dietary patterns influenced by their nomadic lifestyle and cultural traditions. Their diet typically consists of dairy products, grains, and locally available foods, which provide essential nutrients. However, changing environmental conditions, urbanization, and economic factors may be altering their traditional dietary habits.

In Benue State, where the Fulani population is significant, understanding their dietary patterns is crucial for addressing potential nutrition-related health challenges. This study investigates the dietary habits of Fulani communities, examining how cultural and socioeconomic factors shape their food choices.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the unique dietary habits of Fulani communities, limited research exists on their nutritional status and the impact of dietary transitions on their health. Many Fulani people may experience challenges such as food insecurity, lack of dietary diversity, and exposure to modern food trends. This study seeks to explore the dietary patterns of Fulani communities in Benue State and their implications for health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the common dietary patterns among Fulani communities in Benue State.

  2. To assess the nutritional adequacy of their diets.

  3. To examine factors influencing dietary changes within Fulani communities.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary dietary patterns of Fulani communities in Benue State?

  2. Do Fulani diets provide adequate nutrients for optimal health?

  3. What factors contribute to changes in dietary habits among Fulani populations?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The dietary patterns of Fulani communities are primarily influenced by their traditional lifestyle.

  2. Fulani diets provide essential nutrients but may lack dietary diversity.

  3. Socioeconomic and environmental factors contribute to changes in Fulani dietary habits.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on Fulani communities in Benue State, assessing their dietary patterns and nutritional adequacy. Limitations include variations in diet based on regional differences, seasonal food availability, and potential dietary modifications due to modernization.
