Background of the Study
Agriculture is a fundamental determinant of food security and household nutrition. It ensures the availability of diverse and nutritious food, contributes to income generation, and influences dietary choices. Households engaged in farming often have better access to fresh produce, which enhances their nutritional intake. However, agricultural productivity is affected by factors such as climate change, access to inputs, and market dynamics, which can impact household nutrition.
Benue State, often referred to as the “food basket of Nigeria,” is known for its rich agricultural output. The state produces crops such as yams, rice, and vegetables, contributing to both local and national food supply. However, despite high agricultural productivity, malnutrition and food insecurity persist in some communities. Understanding the relationship between agriculture and household nutrition is crucial for improving food security strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the agricultural potential of Benue State, many households still experience food insecurity and poor nutrition. This paradox suggests that factors beyond food production, such as income distribution, food utilization, and market access, influence household nutrition. Previous studies have focused on agricultural productivity but have not sufficiently examined its direct impact on household nutrition. This study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing how agricultural activities affect household dietary diversity and nutritional outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the relationship between agriculture and household nutrition in Benue State.
To assess the challenges affecting agricultural contributions to nutrition.
To propose strategies for enhancing the role of agriculture in household nutrition.
Research Questions
How does agricultural production influence household nutrition in Benue State?
What challenges limit the impact of agriculture on nutrition?
What measures can strengthen agriculture’s role in improving nutrition?
Research Hypotheses
Increased agricultural production leads to improved household nutrition.
Limited access to agricultural resources negatively impacts food security.
Strengthening agricultural policies enhances household nutrition.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on farming households in Benue State and their nutritional status. Limitations include climate variability, market fluctuations, and access to agricultural inputs.
