Background of the Study

Local food markets play a crucial role in enhancing food security by providing access to affordable and diverse food items. These markets serve as primary food sources for many households, particularly in regions where supermarkets and large-scale food chains are limited. Local food markets also support small-scale farmers by providing a platform for selling agricultural produce, thereby strengthening rural economies and enhancing food distribution.

In Kogi State, local food markets are central to food security, as many residents depend on these markets for fresh produce, grains, and animal products. However, factors such as poor infrastructure, inadequate storage facilities, and market inefficiencies hinder food availability and affordability. Understanding the role of local food markets in ensuring food security is essential for developing strategies to improve market efficiency and food accessibility.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of local food markets in food distribution, many challenges, including transportation issues, price fluctuations, and post-harvest losses, affect their efficiency in Kogi State. These factors contribute to food insecurity, particularly among low-income households. While research on food security exists, there is limited empirical evidence on the specific role of local food markets in ensuring adequate food supply in Kogi State. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing market operations and their impact on food security.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of local food markets in food availability and affordability in Kogi State.

  2. To assess the challenges faced by local food markets in enhancing food security.

  3. To propose strategies for improving local food market efficiency and food accessibility.

Research Questions

  1. How do local food markets contribute to food security in Kogi State?

  2. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of local food markets?

  3. What measures can enhance the role of local markets in ensuring food security?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Local food markets significantly improve food availability and affordability.

  2. Poor market infrastructure negatively affects food security.

  3. Strengthening local food markets enhances household food security.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on local food markets in Kogi State and their role in food security. Limitations include market fluctuations and external economic factors affecting food prices.

Definitions of Terms
