Background of the Study

Childhood immunization is one of the most effective public health interventions for preventing infectious diseases and reducing child mortality rates. However, immunization coverage remains suboptimal in parts of Nigeria, including Kaduna State. Maternal education plays a crucial role in determining health-seeking behaviors, including adherence to childhood vaccination schedules (UNICEF, 2024). Mothers with higher education levels are more likely to understand the benefits of immunization and ensure their children receive the necessary vaccines. This study explores the impact of maternal education on childhood immunization uptake in Kaduna State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite extensive immunization programs, childhood vaccine coverage remains inadequate in Kaduna State. One of the possible reasons for this is the varying levels of maternal education, which may influence vaccine knowledge and uptake. Understanding the link between maternal education and immunization adherence will help develop strategies to increase vaccine coverage and reduce preventable childhood diseases.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of childhood immunization uptake in Kaduna State.

2. To examine the relationship between maternal education and childhood immunization adherence.

3. To identify barriers affecting childhood immunization uptake.

Research Questions

1. What is the current rate of childhood immunization uptake in Kaduna State?

2. How does maternal education level influence immunization adherence?

3. What are the barriers to childhood immunization in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Higher maternal education levels are associated with increased childhood immunization uptake.

2. Mothers with limited education are less likely to complete their child’s vaccination schedule.

3. Socioeconomic and cultural factors influence maternal decisions on immunization.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on mothers with children under five in Kaduna State. Limitations may include self-reported immunization data and access to rural populations.

Definitions of Terms

• Childhood Immunization: The process of administering vaccines to children to protect against infectious diseases.

• Maternal Education: The level of formal schooling attained by a mother.

• Immunization Uptake: The proportion of children receiving recommended vaccines according to the national immunization schedule.
