Background of the Study

Obesity is a major global health challenge, contributing to an increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension. The rising prevalence of obesity in Nigeria, including Nasarawa State, is driven by dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, and socioeconomic factors. Poor dietary choices, including high consumption of processed foods, sugary beverages, and unhealthy fats, significantly contribute to obesity rates. Conversely, balanced diets rich in fiber, lean protein, and essential micronutrients play a crucial role in weight management and obesity prevention.

Despite efforts to promote healthy eating, many individuals in Nasarawa State struggle with weight management due to limited awareness of proper nutrition, economic constraints, and cultural food preferences. This study aims to investigate the role of diet in obesity management, exploring how dietary modifications can contribute to weight control and improved overall health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

The increasing obesity rates in Nasarawa State pose serious public health concerns. Many individuals rely on high-calorie, nutrient-poor diets, leading to excessive weight gain and associated health complications. Despite medical recommendations emphasizing the role of nutrition in weight management, adherence to healthy dietary patterns remains low. Furthermore, there is a lack of research focusing on the dietary behaviors of individuals in Nasarawa State concerning obesity management. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the impact of dietary choices on obesity and identifying practical dietary interventions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the dietary habits of obese individuals in Nasarawa State.

  2. To examine the relationship between diet and obesity management.

  3. To recommend dietary strategies for effective weight control.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common dietary habits among obese individuals in Nasarawa State?

  2. How does diet influence obesity management?

  3. What dietary interventions can be implemented to promote healthy weight management?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poor dietary habits contribute to obesity prevalence in Nasarawa State.

  2. A balanced diet with controlled calorie intake aids in effective obesity management.

  3. Nutrition education improves dietary choices and weight management outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on adults with obesity in Nasarawa State, assessing their dietary habits and weight management strategies. Limitations include self-reported dietary data and individual differences in metabolism.
