Background of the Study

Emergency preparedness training is vital for ensuring that healthcare facilities can effectively manage mass casualty incidents (MCIs). Borno State, which has faced numerous security challenges, including terrorist attacks and conflicts, has witnessed several mass casualty incidents that stress its healthcare system (Olawuyi & Ahmed, 2023). Hospitals, as frontline responders to such crises, require well-structured emergency preparedness programs that include training in triage, disaster response coordination, and resource management. Despite the acknowledged importance of emergency preparedness, the level of preparedness and its effect on hospital response to mass casualties in Borno State remain insufficiently explored.

Statement of the Problem

While mass casualties in Borno State are not uncommon, many hospitals may not be adequately prepared to handle large-scale emergencies. This lack of readiness may result in inefficient responses, poor outcomes, and unnecessary loss of life. Thus, the extent to which emergency preparedness training impacts hospital readiness to respond to mass casualty incidents is crucial to improving health outcomes during emergencies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of emergency preparedness training provided to healthcare professionals in Borno State.

2. To examine the effectiveness of emergency preparedness training on hospital response to mass casualties.

3. To identify challenges that affect the implementation of emergency preparedness training in hospitals.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of emergency preparedness training among healthcare professionals in Borno State?

2. How effective is emergency preparedness training in improving hospital response to mass casualty incidents?

3. What challenges hinder the implementation and effectiveness of emergency preparedness training in hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

1. Healthcare professionals in Borno State have inadequate emergency preparedness training.

2. Emergency preparedness training significantly improves hospital response to mass casualties.

3. Resource limitations and logistical challenges reduce the effectiveness of emergency preparedness training in hospitals.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on hospitals in Borno State and assess their preparedness for mass casualty events. Limitations may include variability in training levels across hospitals, differences in available resources, and challenges in accessing certain hospitals due to security concerns.

Definitions of Terms

• Emergency Preparedness Training: Instruction provided to healthcare workers on how to respond effectively during emergencies, including mass casualties.

• Mass Casualties: Events that result in a large number of casualties requiring immediate medical attention and overwhelming the capacity of the healthcare system.
