Background of the Study
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the joints, leading to pain, swelling, and eventual joint damage. While medical treatments such as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are crucial for managing RA, diet also plays a significant role in alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life. A balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins, can help reduce inflammation and modulate immune function, thus benefiting individuals with RA. In Kano State, a region with a diverse cultural and dietary landscape, the role of diet in managing RA is not well understood. This study aims to examine how specific dietary patterns influence the management of rheumatoid arthritis in Kano State, with the goal of providing evidence-based recommendations for dietary interventions that could enhance treatment outcomes for RA patients.
Statement of the Problem
Rheumatoid arthritis affects a substantial portion of the adult population in Kano State, yet there is limited research exploring the impact of diet on the management of this condition. While some studies have suggested that certain foods may reduce inflammation and improve joint function, many individuals with RA in Kano State rely solely on medication without considering the potential benefits of dietary modifications. Additionally, cultural and socio-economic factors may influence dietary choices, which could either support or hinder effective management of the disease. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how diet affects the management of rheumatoid arthritis in Kano State and identifying dietary changes that could improve patient outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on rheumatoid arthritis patients in Kano State, examining the relationship between their dietary habits and disease management. It will not delve deeply into genetic factors or medical treatments outside of diet. A limitation of the study is the reliance on self-reported dietary data, which may be subject to recall bias, and the focus on a single region, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
