Background of the Study
Smartphones have become an essential part of modern life, providing users with instant access to communication, information, and entertainment. However, excessive smartphone use among adolescents has raised concerns about addiction and its impact on mental health, academic performance, and social interactions (WHO, 2024). Smartphone addiction, characterized by compulsive usage, withdrawal symptoms, and a loss of control over screen time, has been linked to anxiety, depression, and poor sleep quality (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023).
In Nigeria, and specifically in Nasarawa State, adolescents increasingly rely on smartphones for social media, gaming, and online interactions. While smartphones offer educational benefits, excessive usage has been observed to negatively affect attention spans, relationships, and overall well-being (Okafor & Musa, 2023). Despite the growing prevalence of smartphone addiction, awareness of its symptoms and consequences remains low, with many adolescents and their parents unaware of the risks associated with excessive screen time.
This study seeks to assess the level of smartphone addiction awareness among adolescents in Nasarawa State, evaluate their understanding of its effects, and explore strategies to promote responsible smartphone usage.
Statement of the Problem
Smartphone addiction is a growing concern among adolescents, yet awareness about its risks and prevention strategies remains limited. Many adolescents in Nasarawa State spend excessive time on smartphones without realizing the potential negative effects on their mental and physical health, academic performance, and social relationships (Okafor & Musa, 2023).
Despite the increasing discussions on digital well-being, schools and parents have limited knowledge on how to educate adolescents about healthy smartphone habits. Without adequate awareness, many adolescents may develop addictive behaviors that can lead to long-term consequences such as decreased productivity, disrupted sleep patterns, and increased stress levels. This study aims to assess the current level of awareness about smartphone addiction among adolescents in Nasarawa State and recommend strategies for promoting responsible smartphone use.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of awareness of smartphone addiction among adolescents in Nasarawa State.
2. To examine the effects of excessive smartphone use on adolescents’ mental health and academic performance.
3. To recommend strategies for promoting responsible smartphone usage among adolescents.
Research Questions
1. How aware are adolescents in Nasarawa State of smartphone addiction and its effects?
2. What impact does excessive smartphone usage have on adolescents' mental health and academic performance?
3. What strategies can be implemented to promote responsible smartphone use among adolescents?
Research Hypotheses
1. Awareness of smartphone addiction among adolescents in Nasarawa State is low.
2. Excessive smartphone use negatively affects adolescents’ mental health and academic performance.
3. Implementing smartphone usage education programs will improve awareness and promote healthier usage habits.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adolescents in secondary schools across Nasarawa State, assessing their awareness of smartphone addiction and its consequences. Limitations may include self-reporting biases, as some participants may underreport or overreport their smartphone usage habits.
