Background of the Study

Job satisfaction is a critical factor influencing the performance, retention, and well-being of healthcare workers. Satisfied employees are more likely to provide high-quality care, remain committed to their work, and experience lower levels of stress and burnout. However, in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, job dissatisfaction is a common challenge due to factors such as inadequate salaries, poor working conditions, lack of career growth opportunities, and security concerns.

Borno State, which has experienced prolonged conflict and insecurity, presents unique challenges for healthcare workers. Many medical professionals in the state face harsh working conditions, threats to personal safety, and resource shortages. These factors contribute to low morale, high staff turnover, and reduced healthcare service efficiency.

This study seeks to evaluate the level of job satisfaction among healthcare workers in Borno State, identifying key determinants and proposing measures to improve their working conditions.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the essential role healthcare workers play, many in Borno State express dissatisfaction with their jobs due to low pay, inadequate infrastructure, and security risks. High rates of burnout and migration of skilled personnel to other states or countries further exacerbate healthcare service challenges.

If job dissatisfaction is not addressed, the healthcare system in Borno State may face continued workforce shortages and declining service quality. This study aims to evaluate the key factors affecting job satisfaction and recommend strategies for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of job satisfaction among healthcare workers in Borno State.

  2. To identify the key factors influencing job satisfaction in the healthcare sector.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving job satisfaction and retention of healthcare workers.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of job satisfaction among healthcare workers in Borno State?

  2. What factors influence job satisfaction among healthcare professionals?

  3. What strategies can improve job satisfaction and reduce workforce attrition?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Low job satisfaction contributes to high turnover rates among healthcare workers.

  2. Poor working conditions and low salaries negatively affect healthcare workers’ morale.

  3. Improving work environments and career development opportunities will enhance job satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on healthcare workers in Borno State, assessing their job satisfaction levels and the factors influencing them. Data will be collected from doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining responses due to security concerns.
