Background of the Study
Gender discrimination in the healthcare sector remains a significant challenge globally. Despite the increasing participation of women in healthcare professions, gender disparities persist in employment, promotions, and leadership roles (WHO, 2024). Women in healthcare often experience unequal pay, limited career advancement opportunities, and biases in recruitment and workplace policies.
In Nigeria, and particularly in Plateau State, gender-based discrimination in healthcare employment policies is a concern that has received limited academic attention. Studies suggest that female healthcare professionals face challenges such as exclusion from leadership positions, workplace harassment, and limited access to professional development opportunities compared to their male counterparts (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023).
This study aims to examine gender-based discrimination in healthcare employment policies in Plateau State. By analyzing recruitment patterns, promotion opportunities, and workplace experiences, the research seeks to highlight discriminatory practices and propose strategies for fostering gender equality in healthcare employment.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to promote gender equality in various sectors, the healthcare industry in Plateau State continues to experience gender-based disparities in employment policies. Female healthcare workers often face challenges such as glass ceilings in promotions, lower salaries compared to male colleagues in similar roles, and workplace discrimination (Okafor & Musa, 2023).
There is a lack of enforcement of gender-equality policies in the healthcare sector, allowing systemic biases to persist. Without deliberate interventions, gender-based discrimination could limit the potential of female healthcare workers, affecting overall workforce efficiency and service delivery. This study seeks to examine the extent of gender-based discrimination in healthcare employment policies in Plateau State and suggest ways to address these inequalities.
