Background of the Study
Tertiary healthcare institutions play a crucial role in providing specialized medical services, advanced treatments, and medical training. However, sustaining their operations requires substantial financial resources, making revenue generation a key priority. In Nigeria, many tertiary healthcare institutions face financial constraints due to inadequate government funding, inefficient financial management, and a heavy reliance on patient fees.
In Benue State, tertiary healthcare institutions, such as teaching hospitals and federal medical centers, struggle with limited budgets, leading to insufficient medical supplies, outdated equipment, and delayed salaries for healthcare workers. To address these challenges, hospitals have adopted various revenue generation strategies, including service charges, public-private partnerships, and internally generated revenue (IGR) initiatives. However, the effectiveness of these strategies in ensuring financial sustainability and service quality remains unclear.
This study seeks to assess the revenue generation strategies employed by tertiary healthcare institutions in Benue State, evaluating their efficiency and identifying areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of different revenue generation strategies, tertiary healthcare institutions in Benue State continue to experience financial shortfalls, affecting the quality and availability of healthcare services. The over-reliance on patient fees often makes healthcare unaffordable, while alternative sources of revenue remain underutilized.
If these financial challenges persist, the ability of tertiary hospitals to provide specialized care will be compromised, leading to poor health outcomes and reduced access to essential services. This study aims to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of current revenue generation strategies and propose recommendations for sustainable financial management.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the revenue generation strategies employed by tertiary healthcare institutions in Benue State.
To assess the effectiveness of these strategies in ensuring financial sustainability and service delivery.
To recommend innovative and sustainable approaches to revenue generation in tertiary healthcare institutions.
