Background of the Study
Healthcare financing is a critical determinant of the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of health service delivery. Different healthcare financing models exist, including tax-based public financing, social health insurance, private health insurance, and out-of-pocket payments. The choice of financing model influences healthcare accessibility, affordability, and sustainability.
In Nigeria, healthcare financing remains a significant challenge due to limited government funding, low health insurance coverage, and high out-of-pocket expenses. Adamawa State, like many other states in the country, struggles with inadequate health financing, leading to poor healthcare infrastructure, shortages of medical supplies, and low healthcare worker motivation. The state government has implemented various financing models, including public healthcare funding and health insurance schemes, to improve service delivery. However, the effectiveness of these financing strategies remains unclear.
This study seeks to evaluate different healthcare financing models in Adamawa State and their impact on service delivery, identifying the most effective approaches for improving healthcare outcomes.
Despite efforts to improve healthcare financing in Adamawa State, many health facilities continue to experience funding shortages, poor infrastructure, and limited access to medical services. The reliance on out-of-pocket payments places a heavy financial burden on individuals, while public health insurance coverage remains low.
If these financing issues persist, the quality and accessibility of healthcare services may continue to decline, negatively impacting health outcomes. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of different healthcare financing models in improving service delivery in Adamawa State.
