Background of the Study

Condom use is one of the most effective methods for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies. However, many young adults in Nigeria engage in risky sexual behaviors due to limited access to accurate sexual health information, cultural taboos, and peer pressure. In Plateau State, where youth sexual activity is increasing, interventions to promote safe sex practices are crucial (UNFPA, 2024).

Peer education has emerged as a successful strategy in promoting sexual health awareness and behavior change among young adults. Peer educators, who are young people trained to share accurate sexual health information, play a crucial role in increasing condom use by addressing myths, reducing stigma, and providing relatable guidance on safe sex practices (Adeyemi & Musa, 2023). However, despite the implementation of peer-led programs in Nigeria, there is limited research on their effectiveness in Plateau State. This study seeks to investigate the role of peer educators in promoting condom use and assess their impact on young adults’ sexual health behaviors.

Statement of the Problem

The prevalence of unprotected sex among young adults in Plateau State remains high, contributing to increased cases of STIs, including HIV/AIDS, and unintended pregnancies. Many young people lack adequate knowledge about condom use, often due to cultural restrictions on discussing sexual health and misinformation about contraceptives (Okafor & Yusuf, 2024).

Peer education has been identified as a potentially effective approach to addressing these challenges. However, it is unclear how well peer educators are influencing condom use among young adults in Plateau State. Challenges such as social stigma, resistance from conservative groups, and inadequate support for peer-led initiatives may be limiting their effectiveness. This study aims to explore the impact of peer educators in promoting condom use and identify ways to strengthen peer education programs.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of peer educators in promoting condom use among young adults in Plateau State.

2. To identify challenges faced by peer educators in disseminating sexual health information.

3. To assess young adults' perceptions of peer-led sexual health education.

Research Questions

1. How effective are peer educators in promoting condom use among young adults in Plateau State?

2. What challenges do peer educators face in delivering sexual health information?

3. How do young adults perceive peer-led sexual health education?

Research Hypotheses

1. Peer education significantly increases condom use among young adults in Plateau State.

2. Social and cultural barriers limit the effectiveness of peer-led sexual health education.

3. Young adults are more likely to adopt safe sex practices when educated by their peers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on young adults in Plateau State, particularly those in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and youth organizations. It will examine the effectiveness of peer educators, the challenges they face, and the overall impact of peer-led sexual health programs. Limitations may include difficulty in measuring actual condom use and possible bias in self-reported behaviors.
