Background of the Study
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a leading cause of cervical cancer, one of the most common cancers affecting women globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies HPV vaccination as a crucial preventive measure in reducing cervical cancer incidence. Despite global efforts to increase HPV vaccine coverage, Nigeria continues to face challenges related to awareness, accessibility, and vaccine hesitancy, particularly in northern states such as Jigawa (WHO, 2024).
Female students in secondary and tertiary institutions are a key demographic for HPV vaccination programs, as early vaccination (before sexual debut) is most effective in preventing infection. However, in many communities, including Jigawa State, limited knowledge about HPV and its associated risks contributes to low vaccine uptake. Additionally, cultural and religious concerns, misconceptions about vaccine safety, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure further hinder vaccine acceptance (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2024).
This study aims to examine the level of awareness and uptake of the HPV vaccine among female students in Jigawa State. By assessing factors influencing vaccination rates, the study seeks to provide insights into how public health initiatives can be improved to increase HPV vaccine coverage.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of the HPV vaccine as a preventive measure against cervical cancer, its uptake remains low in many parts of Nigeria, including Jigawa State. Studies suggest that awareness of the vaccine and its benefits is significantly limited among young females, resulting in poor acceptance and coverage (Okonkwo & Musa, 2023). Factors such as misinformation, concerns over side effects, religious influences, and lack of proper vaccine distribution systems further contribute to low uptake.
Given the high burden of cervical cancer and the preventable nature of HPV infections, it is crucial to understand the barriers to HPV vaccine adoption. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing awareness levels, identifying key factors influencing vaccine uptake, and proposing strategies to improve HPV vaccination rates among female students in Jigawa State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of awareness of the HPV vaccine among female students in Jigawa State.
2. To evaluate the factors influencing HPV vaccine uptake, including cultural, religious, and healthcare-related barriers.
3. To recommend strategies for improving HPV vaccination coverage among female students.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of awareness of the HPV vaccine among female students in Jigawa State?
2. What factors influence the uptake of the HPV vaccine in this demographic?
3. What strategies can be implemented to increase HPV vaccination rates?
Research Hypotheses
1. HPV vaccine awareness among female students in Jigawa State is significantly low.
2. Socio-cultural and religious beliefs negatively impact HPV vaccine uptake.
3. Targeted health education campaigns will improve HPV vaccine acceptance among female students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on female students in secondary and tertiary institutions in Jigawa State. It will assess their knowledge of HPV, their attitudes toward the vaccine, and the factors affecting vaccine uptake. Limitations may include reluctance from students to discuss vaccination due to cultural or religious beliefs and potential recall bias in self-reported awareness and uptake.
