Background of the Study

Occupational health and safety (OHS) education is essential for preventing workplace injuries and illnesses, particularly in factory settings where workers are exposed to hazardous conditions. Effective OHS education can significantly reduce workplace accidents, enhance productivity, and ensure compliance with labor regulations (ILO, 2024).

In Sokoto State, factory workers often face safety risks due to inadequate training, lack of protective equipment, and insufficient enforcement of OHS policies (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Despite regulations mandating safety training, many workers remain unaware of basic occupational health measures. This study appraises the effectiveness of OHS education among factory workers in Sokoto State.

Statement of the Problem

Work-related injuries and illnesses remain prevalent among factory workers in Sokoto State, despite the existence of occupational health and safety regulations. Many workers do not receive adequate safety training, leading to increased risks of workplace accidents (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). The effectiveness of current OHS education programs in enhancing workers' safety awareness and reducing incidents requires further evaluation.

This study examines the state of OHS education among factory workers and explores ways to improve its impact.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of occupational health and safety education among factory workers in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of OHS education programs in reducing workplace hazards.
  3. To identify challenges in implementing OHS education in factories.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of OHS education among factory workers in Sokoto State?
  2. How effective are OHS education programs in reducing workplace hazards?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the implementation of OHS education in factories?

Research Hypotheses

  1. OHS education has no significant impact on factory workers’ awareness of workplace safety.
  2. There is no significant relationship between OHS education and reduced workplace hazards.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the effectiveness of OHS education programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on factory workers in Sokoto State, evaluating their awareness of OHS education and its impact on workplace safety. Limitations include variations in workplace conditions, differences in training accessibility, and enforcement issues.
