Background of the Study
Pesticides play a crucial role in modern agriculture, enhancing crop yield and controlling pests. However, improper pesticide handling and application can lead to serious health hazards, including respiratory diseases, skin disorders, and neurological problems (WHO, 2024). In many developing regions, including Jigawa State, farmers often lack adequate knowledge of pesticide safety measures, leading to excessive exposure and long-term health complications.
Despite government and non-governmental efforts to educate farmers on pesticide safety, many still apply pesticides without protective gear, store chemicals improperly, and use unsafe disposal methods (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Addressing these challenges through effective pesticide safety education is essential to protecting farmers' health.
This study investigates the impact of pesticide safety education on farmers’ health in Jigawa State, assessing whether increased awareness translates into safer pesticide use and reduced health risks.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of guidelines for safe pesticide use, cases of pesticide-related illnesses remain high among farmers in Jigawa State (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Many farmers lack formal education on pesticide safety, leading to excessive exposure and associated health issues. The effectiveness of existing pesticide safety education programs in improving farmers' knowledge and health outcomes remains uncertain.
This study aims to evaluate how pesticide safety education influences farmers' health and identify barriers to effective implementation.
