Background of the Study

Malnutrition remains a pressing public health issue in Nigeria, particularly affecting school-aged children (UNICEF, 2024). Poor dietary habits contribute to undernutrition, stunted growth, and micronutrient deficiencies, which impair cognitive development and academic performance (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). Nutrition education in primary schools is a strategic intervention aimed at improving children's dietary choices and promoting long-term healthy eating behaviors (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

Katsina State has implemented various nutrition education programs to combat childhood malnutrition and obesity. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives in enhancing knowledge, attitudes, and dietary behaviors among schoolchildren remains unclear. This study evaluates the impact of nutrition education programs in primary schools in Katsina State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the introduction of school nutrition programs, malnutrition rates among children in Katsina State remain high. Many children lack basic knowledge about healthy eating, and school meal programs are often inadequate in addressing their dietary needs (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

This study examines the effectiveness of nutrition education programs in primary schools, focusing on their impact on children's dietary habits and nutritional knowledge.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of nutrition knowledge among primary school students in Katsina State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of nutrition education programs on children's dietary habits.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of nutrition education in schools.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nutrition knowledge among primary school students in Katsina State?
  2. How do nutrition education programs influence children's dietary behaviors?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the implementation of nutrition education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nutrition education programs have no significant impact on children's dietary habits.
  2. There is no significant relationship between nutrition knowledge and food choices among schoolchildren.
  3. Barriers to nutrition education do not significantly affect program effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on primary schools in Katsina State, evaluating the effectiveness of nutrition education programs. Limitations include differences in school resources and variations in parental influence on children's eating habits.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nutrition Education: The process of teaching individuals about healthy eating habits and proper nutrition.
  • Malnutrition: A condition caused by poor diet, leading to deficiencies or excesses in essential nutrients.
