Background of the Study
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a significant genetic blood disorder affecting millions of people worldwide, with Nigeria having the highest global burden (WHO, 2024). The disease results in chronic pain, organ damage, and increased vulnerability to infections, impacting the quality of life of affected individuals. Despite advancements in SCD management, many communities lack adequate knowledge about the condition, leading to stigma, late diagnosis, and poor treatment adherence (Adebayo & Salami, 2024).
Community sensitization programs aim to educate the public on SCD, improve early diagnosis, promote genetic counseling, and enhance disease management practices (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). In Bauchi State, several community-based initiatives have been launched to raise awareness, but their effectiveness remains largely unassessed. This study investigates the impact of community sensitization on SCD management in Bauchi State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the high prevalence of SCD in Nigeria, many affected individuals face inadequate healthcare access, limited knowledge, and significant stigma, which hampers effective disease management (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024). While community sensitization programs have been introduced, there is little empirical evidence on their effectiveness in improving SCD awareness, treatment adherence, and healthcare-seeking behavior in Bauchi State.
This study evaluates the impact of community sensitization programs on SCD management, focusing on awareness levels, access to healthcare, and social acceptance of affected individuals.
