Background of the Study

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a significant genetic blood disorder affecting millions of people worldwide, with Nigeria having the highest global burden (WHO, 2024). The disease results in chronic pain, organ damage, and increased vulnerability to infections, impacting the quality of life of affected individuals. Despite advancements in SCD management, many communities lack adequate knowledge about the condition, leading to stigma, late diagnosis, and poor treatment adherence (Adebayo & Salami, 2024).

Community sensitization programs aim to educate the public on SCD, improve early diagnosis, promote genetic counseling, and enhance disease management practices (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). In Bauchi State, several community-based initiatives have been launched to raise awareness, but their effectiveness remains largely unassessed. This study investigates the impact of community sensitization on SCD management in Bauchi State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the high prevalence of SCD in Nigeria, many affected individuals face inadequate healthcare access, limited knowledge, and significant stigma, which hampers effective disease management (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024). While community sensitization programs have been introduced, there is little empirical evidence on their effectiveness in improving SCD awareness, treatment adherence, and healthcare-seeking behavior in Bauchi State.

This study evaluates the impact of community sensitization programs on SCD management, focusing on awareness levels, access to healthcare, and social acceptance of affected individuals.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness about SCD among communities in Bauchi State.
  2. To examine the impact of community sensitization programs on SCD management practices.
  3. To identify barriers to effective community-based SCD interventions.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness about SCD among communities in Bauchi State?
  2. How do community sensitization programs influence SCD management practices?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the effectiveness of SCD sensitization programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Community sensitization has no significant impact on SCD awareness.
  2. There is no significant relationship between community sensitization and SCD management practices.
  3. Barriers to community sensitization do not significantly affect SCD education and healthcare-seeking behavior.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on selected communities in Bauchi State, evaluating their knowledge of SCD and the effectiveness of community sensitization programs. Limitations include variations in program implementation and differences in healthcare access.
