Background of the Study
Tobacco use remains a significant public health challenge, contributing to non-communicable diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders. Despite global anti-smoking campaigns, tobacco consumption persists due to addiction, peer influence, and inadequate awareness about its health risks (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, the National Tobacco Control Act seeks to regulate tobacco use, but smoking rates remain high, particularly among young adults (Adebayo & Salami, 2024).
In Kebbi State, awareness programs and smoking cessation initiatives have been introduced to educate the public on the dangers of tobacco use and provide support for quitting (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these programs in reducing smoking prevalence and encouraging cessation remains uncertain. This study examines tobacco use awareness and the impact of smoking cessation programs in Kebbi State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to curb tobacco use, smoking remains prevalent in Kebbi State, particularly among young adults and middle-aged individuals. Many smokers are unaware of the full extent of tobacco-related health risks, while smoking cessation programs often face challenges related to accessibility and effectiveness (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).
This study evaluates the level of tobacco use awareness in Kebbi State and assesses the effectiveness of smoking cessation programs in reducing tobacco consumption.
