Background of the Study

Obesity among adolescents has become a growing public health issue in Nigeria, with dietary habits playing a significant role in its prevalence (WHO, 2024). Poor nutrition, high consumption of processed foods, and a sedentary lifestyle contribute to obesity and its associated health risks, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and psychological distress (Adebayo & Salami, 2024).

Dietary education aims to provide adolescents with knowledge about healthy eating habits, portion control, and the importance of physical activity (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024). In Niger State, dietary education programs have been introduced in schools and communities to promote healthier choices among young people. However, the impact of these interventions on obesity reduction remains underexplored.

Statement of the Problem

Despite existing dietary education initiatives, adolescent obesity rates continue to rise in Niger State. Many young people lack awareness about the consequences of poor dietary habits, and unhealthy eating patterns persist due to cultural preferences, economic constraints, and limited access to healthy food options (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

This study assesses the effectiveness of dietary education programs in reducing obesity among adolescents in Niger State, identifying key gaps and challenges in implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of dietary education among adolescents in Niger State.
  2. To examine the impact of dietary education on obesity reduction among adolescents.
  3. To identify barriers affecting the effectiveness of dietary education programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of dietary education among adolescents in Niger State?
  2. How does dietary education influence obesity reduction among adolescents?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the effectiveness of dietary education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Dietary education has no significant impact on obesity reduction among adolescents.
  2. There is no significant relationship between dietary education and healthy eating habits.
  3. Socio-economic factors do not significantly influence dietary education outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on adolescents in Niger State, assessing the role of dietary education in reducing obesity. Limitations include variations in dietary education exposure and challenges in measuring long-term behavioral changes.

Definitions of Terms

  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat accumulation leading to health risks.
  • Dietary Education: Instructional programs aimed at promoting healthy eating habits and nutrition awareness.
