Background of the Study
Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria, is a major public health concern in many developing countries, particularly in regions with inadequate sanitation and poor access to clean water. Cholera outbreaks are common in Nigeria, particularly in states like Borno, where challenges such as conflicts, displacement, and poor infrastructure exacerbate the spread of the disease (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024).
Health education plays a vital role in preventing cholera by promoting hygiene practices, safe water consumption, and proper sanitation. In Borno State, health authorities and NGOs have implemented health education campaigns aimed at raising awareness about cholera transmission and prevention strategies. These programs include community-based interventions such as hygiene promotion, safe water storage techniques, and sanitation education (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).
Despite these efforts, cholera remains a recurring problem, especially in areas with high population displacement and poor sanitation infrastructure (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024). This study investigates the role of health education in cholera prevention in Borno State, evaluating the effectiveness of existing programs and identifying barriers to successful implementation.
Statement of the Problem
Borno State has experienced recurrent cholera outbreaks, despite the presence of health education campaigns aimed at prevention (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Challenges such as insecurity, poor sanitation, and a lack of access to clean water contribute to the persistence of cholera in the state. Although health education programs have been designed to mitigate these risks, their impact has been limited by inadequate outreach, low community participation, and resistance to adopting recommended practices (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of health education in cholera prevention and propose strategies for improving public health education in Borno State.
