Background of the Study
Shift work policies play a crucial role in determining the efficiency and productivity of healthcare workers. In many healthcare institutions, shift work is implemented to ensure round-the-clock service delivery, particularly in emergency and intensive care units (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). However, poorly structured shift work policies, including long working hours, irregular scheduling, and insufficient rest periods, can negatively impact healthcare worker productivity, leading to fatigue, stress, and decreased job satisfaction (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).
In Sokoto State, healthcare facilities rely heavily on shift work arrangements to meet the growing demand for medical services. However, many healthcare workers report experiencing excessive workload, disrupted sleep patterns, and reduced efficiency due to ineffective shift policies (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). The consequences include an increase in medical errors, reduced patient satisfaction, and high turnover rates among healthcare staff (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
This study evaluates the impact of shift work policies on healthcare worker productivity in Sokoto State, examining their effectiveness and potential areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Healthcare workers in Sokoto State frequently experience productivity challenges due to inefficient shift work policies, including excessive night shifts, inadequate breaks, and poor scheduling systems (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). These factors lead to physical and mental fatigue, negatively affecting their ability to deliver quality patient care (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
Despite the existence of national and institutional guidelines on shift work, many healthcare facilities in Sokoto State fail to implement policies that balance workforce needs with employee well-being. This study aims to appraise the impact of shift work policies on healthcare worker productivity and propose strategies for improving work schedules in healthcare settings.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on healthcare workers in public and private hospitals in Sokoto State, analyzing the effects of shift work policies on productivity. Limitations may include difficulty in measuring subjective factors like fatigue and reluctance of healthcare workers to disclose the full impact of their work schedules.
