Background of the Study

The introduction of the internet in the 1990s ushered in a period of significant advancement in the field of communication. The Internet is become an integral part of people's everyday lives and routines. It is impossible to envision a young guy who does not check for changes in social networks at least once a day and who does not scroll through the news lines. The current state of affairs compels us to maintain contact with one another and remain current with events occurring in other parts of the world (Camilia, 2020).

There is no question that the advent of the internet was a significant factor in the development of social networking websites (SNSS). The establishment of these websites brought about a sea change in the field of communication, and today we commemorate the improvements that it has brought to fields as diverse as education and entertainment. According to recent research, The development of the internet has led to its use as the best method of communication, wherein two-thirds (2/3) of the population of the online world visits social networking sites (SNSs), which serve as instruments for communication and connection. The term "social media" refers to these online networking platforms.

The use of social networking sites has grown to become a widespread phenomenon all across the globe, and its influence can now be found in almost every country. The usage of social media websites has skyrocketed, and they have developed into online platforms where users rapidly produce material, share that information with others, bookmark that content, and network with one another. Students are among the most active users of the various social media platforms. There is no question that using social networking sites has become an essential component of the lives of today's students and has consumed the vast majority of their spare time. There have been a variety of viewpoints and ideas that agree on the existence of four significant benefits associated with the usage of social media in higher education. Among them are the improvement of relationships, the enhancement of learning motivation, the provision of individualized instructional materials, and the development of talents to work in collaboration ( Locke, 2019). Also, Lebans (2016) argued that students are socially connected with one another and as a result share their daily learning experiences and do conversation on various topics through social media. On the other hand, Kilmanr (2018) reviewed that social network websites grab students' attention and then divert it towards non-educational and inappropriate actions including pointless chatting. Lebans (2016) and Kilmanr (2018) both agree that social media has a significant impact on students' learning.

According to the findings of various scientific studies, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of social networks because they are led to believe that love and friendship are simple states to achieve and just as simple to lose. In addition, for young people who are accustomed to the frenetic pace of life on the Internet, the truth may appear to be unreasonably boring, and they may try their hand at it, even though it will be impossible to "restore" it by engaging in irresponsible behaviors. There are some who are advocates for the use of social media. They assert that the latter two provide access to knowledge and assist students in quickly exchanging information with one another. Some people believe that students mainly utilize social media to converse about topics other than their academic work and that these platforms merely serve to divert students' attention away from the process of learning (Madubuke , 2020).

As is common knowledge, nothing fascinating ever has just one side to it, and the same is true for social media in that it has both good and bad affects on people's lives. There is a connection between the amount of time that college students spend on social media and their overall academic performance. The findings of this research will demonstrate that students make considerable use of social media platforms. Mba (2022), for example, argues that past research have revealed that more than ninety percent of students enrolled in postsecondary education make use of social networks. It has also been discovered that students spend approximately thirty (30) minutes of their day using social networking sites (SNSs) as part of their regular routine life (Mubaraq, 2021). This demonstrates the extent to which students visit these sites, which may have consequences for students' academic achievement, both favorable and unfavorable, depending on the circumstances. Therefore, this study seeks to examines  influence of social media on the academic performance of student in library and information science in Rivers State University
