Background of the Study

Proper medical waste management (MWM) is crucial for protecting public health and preventing environmental hazards. Medical waste includes hazardous materials such as used syringes, contaminated dressings, expired medications, and laboratory chemicals that require safe disposal (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Poor waste management practices in healthcare facilities can lead to the spread of infectious diseases, soil and water contamination, and increased risks to healthcare workers and the public (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).

In Nigeria, government policies on medical waste management aim to regulate waste disposal through guidelines on waste segregation, collection, treatment, and disposal (National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency [NESREA], 2024). However, many states, including Taraba, still struggle with inadequate waste disposal systems, improper handling of hazardous materials, and weak enforcement of existing regulations (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Healthcare facilities in Taraba State often lack proper waste management facilities, leading to environmental pollution and health risks (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).

This study seeks to examine government policies on medical waste management in Taraba State, evaluating their effectiveness, challenges, and the impact of inadequate waste management on healthcare delivery and environmental safety.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the existence of medical waste management policies, many healthcare facilities in Taraba State do not comply with proper waste disposal practices. Poor waste segregation, lack of incineration facilities, and improper disposal of hazardous materials contribute to environmental and public health risks (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Additionally, weak regulatory enforcement and limited government oversight allow for continued mismanagement of medical waste (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).

The impact of ineffective medical waste management policies on healthcare safety and environmental sustainability remains a significant concern. This study seeks to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these policies and propose strategies for improving waste management in healthcare facilities in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the effectiveness of government policies on medical waste management in Taraba State.
  2. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of medical waste management policies.
  3. To propose strategies for improving medical waste management practices in healthcare facilities.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are government policies on medical waste management in Taraba State?
  2. What challenges hinder the implementation of medical waste management policies?
  3. What strategies can improve medical waste management practices in healthcare facilities?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Government policies on medical waste management have no significant impact on waste disposal practices in Taraba State.
  2. Weak enforcement and inadequate waste management facilities significantly hinder policy effectiveness.
  3. Strengthened regulatory oversight and improved infrastructure will enhance medical waste management practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on government policies related to medical waste management in Taraba State. It will examine healthcare facilities' waste disposal practices and regulatory compliance. Limitations include challenges in accessing official records on waste management policies and potential biases in survey responses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Medical Waste Management (MWM): The process of handling, treating, and disposing of waste generated in healthcare facilities.
  • Hazardous Medical Waste: Waste materials from healthcare settings that pose risks to human health and the environment.
  • Waste Segregation: The process of separating medical waste into different categories based on disposal requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to government policies and standards related to medical waste disposal.
