Background of the Study
In Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, secondary schools face challenges with school bus routes, including inefficiency, increased fuel costs, and time wasted in transportation (Garba & Musa, 2023). The application of GPS and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to school bus route planning can optimize these routes, reducing operational costs, time, and fuel consumption. AI-based route optimization tools can consider factors such as traffic patterns, road conditions, and student pick-up and drop-off locations. This study will explore the potential of using AI and GPS to optimize school bus routes, improving the efficiency of student transportation in Birnin Kebbi.

Statement of the Problem
Inefficient school bus routes result in higher operational costs and longer travel times for students in Birnin Kebbi. Current route planning methods fail to maximize efficiency and often neglect factors like real-time traffic updates and student distribution. The study will examine how AI and GPS technologies can optimize bus routes to ensure more efficient transportation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current school bus route planning methods in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi.

  2. To assess the potential of AI and GPS for optimizing school bus routes.

  3. To propose an AI-based school bus route optimization model for secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current inefficiencies in school bus route planning in Birnin Kebbi secondary schools?

  2. How can GPS and AI technologies improve the optimization of school bus routes?

  3. What are the potential benefits of implementing AI-based route planning in terms of time, cost, and fuel efficiency?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based optimization will significantly reduce travel time and fuel costs for school bus routes.

  2. GPS and AI integration will improve the efficiency of school bus routes in Birnin Kebbi secondary schools.

  3. Optimizing school bus routes using AI will lead to more effective and reliable student transportation.

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to improving the efficiency of school bus transportation in Birnin Kebbi, potentially leading to reduced transportation costs, better use of resources, and enhanced student safety.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on school bus route planning in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, Kebbi State, using AI and GPS technologies. A limitation could be the difficulty in obtaining accurate traffic data or GPS routing information from all schools in the area.

Definitions of Terms

  • AI-Based Optimization: The use of artificial intelligence to enhance decision-making and improve the performance of systems, such as transportation routes.

  • GPS (Global Positioning System): A satellite-based navigation system used for tracking and determining locations.

  • School Bus Route Planning: The process of determining the most efficient routes for school buses to pick up and drop off students.
