Background of the Study
The digital divide refers to the gap between individuals who have access to modern information and communication technology (ICT) and those who do not (Ajayi & Oyetunde, 2023). In Nigeria, this divide is particularly pronounced in rural and underserved areas, where access to digital tools and the internet remains limited. The digital divide has significant implications for education, as students without access to technology are often left behind in a world that increasingly relies on digital skills for academic success and future employment (Akinyemi & Obinna, 2024). In Zaria, Kaduna State, secondary schools face considerable challenges in bridging the digital divide, affecting student performance and access to educational resources.

The availability and use of digital tools in education can improve students’ academic performance by providing access to diverse learning materials, e-learning platforms, and real-time communication with educators (Kalu & Chigozie, 2025). However, students in Zaria’s disadvantaged schools may struggle to keep up with their peers in more technologically equipped schools, contributing to a widening achievement gap. This study aims to investigate how the digital divide affects student performance in secondary schools in Zaria and to identify potential solutions to address these disparities.

Statement of the Problem
The digital divide is a significant barrier to educational equity, particularly in Zaria, where many students lack access to essential digital tools. The consequences of this divide are evident in student performance, with those without reliable internet or modern devices facing difficulties in keeping up with curriculum demands and technological advancements in education. The study seeks to understand the impact of the digital divide on student performance and explore ways to mitigate its effects.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of the digital divide on student performance in secondary schools in Zaria, Kaduna State.

  2. To identify the factors contributing to the digital divide in Zaria’s secondary schools.

  3. To propose strategies for overcoming the digital divide and improving student performance in Zaria’s secondary schools.

Research Questions

  1. How does the digital divide impact student performance in secondary schools in Zaria?

  2. What factors contribute to the digital divide in secondary schools in Zaria?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the effects of the digital divide on student performance in Zaria?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant negative relationship between the digital divide and student academic performance in secondary schools in Zaria.

  2. Students from schools with limited access to digital tools perform lower academically than their peers in better-equipped schools.

  3. Strategies to address the digital divide will lead to improved student performance in Zaria’s secondary schools.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of the digital divide in shaping student performance in secondary schools in Zaria. The findings will inform policy development aimed at reducing technological disparities and promoting equitable access to educational resources, ultimately improving academic outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on secondary schools in Zaria, Kaduna State, examining how the digital divide affects student performance. It will not include primary schools or other regions outside of Zaria. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing data from schools with limited digital resources and the variability in access to technology across different schools.
