Background of the Study

The management of student attendance is a critical aspect of secondary school administration. Traditional attendance-taking methods, such as manual sign-ins or roll calls, are time-consuming and prone to inaccuracies, such as proxy attendance or errors in record-keeping. In Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, there is an increasing need for a more efficient and accurate method of tracking student attendance. Facial recognition technology offers a solution by providing a contactless, automated way of monitoring attendance that reduces errors and ensures accuracy.

Facial recognition systems use machine learning algorithms to identify and verify individuals based on their facial features. These systems can be integrated with attendance management software to automatically register student attendance when they enter a classroom. The goal of this study is to design and implement an e-attendance monitoring system using facial recognition technology to improve attendance tracking in secondary schools in Dutse.

Statement of the Problem

Secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, continue to rely on traditional methods of recording student attendance, which are often inefficient and prone to errors. These methods can lead to issues such as inaccurate attendance records, time wastage, and difficulties in verifying student presence. Additionally, the manual process leaves room for mismanagement and fraud, such as students marking the attendance of their peers. The implementation of a facial recognition-based e-attendance monitoring system offers a solution by automating attendance tracking in a secure and reliable manner.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement an e-attendance monitoring system using facial recognition technology for secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the facial recognition-based attendance system in improving accuracy and reducing errors.

  3. To assess the impact of the e-attendance system on school administrative efficiency and student compliance with attendance policies.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is the e-attendance monitoring system in accurately tracking student attendance?

  2. What is the impact of the facial recognition-based attendance system on administrative efficiency in secondary schools?

  3. How does the implementation of the e-attendance system affect student attendance and compliance?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of a facial recognition-based e-attendance system improves the accuracy of student attendance tracking.

  2. The e-attendance system increases administrative efficiency by reducing the time spent on manual attendance management.

  3. The implementation of the e-attendance system enhances student compliance with attendance policies.

Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the use of facial recognition technology for attendance monitoring in secondary schools. It will highlight the benefits of automating attendance tracking, including increased accuracy and efficiency. The findings will be useful for school administrators in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, as they seek to modernize school management practices and improve overall efficiency.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the design and implementation of the e-attendance monitoring system using facial recognition technology in secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State. The limitations may include technical challenges in setting up the system, resistance to new technologies, and issues related to data privacy and security.

Definitions of Terms

  • E-Attendance System: An electronic system used to record and monitor student attendance in schools, often automated and integrated with other administrative functions.

  • Facial Recognition Technology: A biometric technology that identifies or verifies individuals based on their facial features.

  • Administrative Efficiency: The ability of a school’s management to perform tasks and processes effectively and with minimal resources.
