Background of the Study

School elections are essential for fostering democratic participation and leadership skills among students. Traditionally, secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, conduct elections manually, which can be time-consuming, prone to errors, and open to manipulation. As the need for efficiency, security, and transparency in elections grows, adopting a digital voting system can address these issues. A digital voting system allows for automated vote counting, easy verification, and greater participation by students, while reducing the likelihood of human error and fraud.

With the increasing integration of technology in education, adopting digital tools for managing school elections presents an opportunity to enhance the overall experience for both students and school administrators. By implementing a secure and user-friendly voting system, schools can encourage greater student participation, increase the efficiency of the election process, and promote transparency and fairness. This study explores the feasibility and impact of implementing a digital voting system for school elections in secondary schools within Dutse Local Government Area.

Statement of the Problem

In Dutse Local Government Area, school elections are often marred by inefficiencies, including the time spent tallying votes manually, the risk of human error, and limited accessibility. This results in delayed outcomes, reduced student involvement, and a lack of transparency. The current manual process could be improved through the introduction of a digital voting system that ensures a streamlined, secure, and transparent election process. However, there is a gap in knowledge regarding the feasibility, implementation challenges, and potential benefits of such a system in this context.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the feasibility of implementing a digital voting system for school elections in secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area.

  2. To evaluate the impact of the digital voting system on the efficiency and transparency of school elections.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of a digital voting system in secondary schools in Dutse.

Research Questions

  1. How feasible is the implementation of a digital voting system for school elections in secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area?

  2. What impact does the digital voting system have on the efficiency and transparency of school elections?

  3. What challenges and opportunities exist in the implementation of a digital voting system in secondary schools in Dutse?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of a digital voting system improves the efficiency and accuracy of school elections in secondary schools in Dutse.

  2. A digital voting system enhances transparency and security in school elections in secondary schools.

  3. The implementation of a digital voting system presents both challenges and opportunities for secondary schools in Dutse.

Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the potential of digital voting systems to improve the efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of school elections in Dutse Local Government Area. It will serve as a guide for schools considering digitalization of their election processes, promoting democratic values, and increasing student engagement in governance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, that are interested in implementing a digital voting system. Limitations include potential resistance to adopting new technologies, limited infrastructure, and the need for adequate training for both students and administrators.
