Background of the Study

The use of Open Educational Resources (OER) has gained significant momentum in education globally. OER refers to teaching, learning, and research materials that are freely accessible and licensed for reuse, modification, and redistribution. In Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, the adoption of OER in secondary schools could provide an affordable alternative to traditional textbooks, reduce costs, and promote greater access to quality educational content.

Despite the potential benefits, the adoption of OER in secondary schools faces several challenges, including lack of awareness, insufficient training for teachers, and resistance to adopting digital tools in educational practices. However, with the increasing digitalization of education, the integration of OER can enhance the learning experience by providing up-to-date materials and fostering collaboration among students and teachers. An evaluation of the current adoption rate and barriers to using OER in Offa Local Government Area will provide valuable insights into how to improve its implementation.

Statement of the Problem

Secondary schools in Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, face challenges in adopting Open Educational Resources due to factors such as limited access to digital devices, insufficient teacher training, and a lack of awareness of the benefits of OER.

  2. What are the main challenges faced by schools in adopting OER?

  3. How can the adoption of OER be improved in secondary schools in Offa Local Government Area?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Secondary schools in Offa Local Government Area have low levels of OER adoption.

  2. Lack of access to digital devices and insufficient teacher training are the primary barriers to OER adoption.

  3. The adoption of OER will improve educational outcomes and access to learning materials in secondary schools.

This study will contribute to enhancing the accessibility and quality of educational resources in secondary schools by promoting the use of Open Educational Resources. The findings may inform policymakers and educators on strategies to improve OER adoption and integration in schools.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary schools in Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, and will involve evaluating the current adoption of OER and identifying barriers to its implementation. Limitations include possible biases in responses and the lack of sufficient OER infrastructure in some schools.
