Background of the Study

Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and premature mortality worldwide (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). It is a chronic medical condition characterized by consistently elevated blood pressure levels, often leading to complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease (Adebayo & Tijani, 2023). In Nigeria, hypertension is a growing public health problem, with an estimated prevalence rate of over 30% among adults, primarily due to lifestyle changes, urbanization, and limited access to healthcare (Olaniyan et al., 2023).

Bauchi State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has experienced a significant rise in non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, due to a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors (Usman & Bello, 2024). Risk factors such as poor dietary habits, high salt intake, obesity, stress, and physical inactivity have contributed to the increasing prevalence of hypertension in the region (Chukwuma et al., 2023). Additionally, limited awareness and inadequate screening programs have led to late diagnosis and poor disease management, exacerbating morbidity and mortality rates.

Despite the increasing burden of hypertension in Bauchi State, there is a lack of comprehensive epidemiological data on its prevalence and risk factors. A better understanding of the disease’s distribution and determinants will enable policymakers and healthcare professionals to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies to reduce the burden of hypertension in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Hypertension is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it remains asymptomatic in its early stages, leading to late diagnosis and severe complications (Adebayo & Tijani, 2023). In Bauchi State, many individuals are unaware of their hypertensive status, resulting in poor health outcomes and increased hospital admissions for hypertension-related complications (Usman & Bello, 2024). The lack of systematic screening programs and inadequate public health awareness campaigns further exacerbate the problem.

Existing studies on hypertension in Nigeria have primarily focused on urban centers, leaving gaps in knowledge regarding its prevalence in semi-urban and rural areas like Bauchi State (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2024). Additionally, while common risk factors such as obesity and poor diet are widely acknowledged, contextual factors such as socio-economic status, stress levels, and cultural dietary practices remain underexplored in Bauchi State. This study aims to address these gaps by assessing the prevalence of hypertension and its associated risk factors in the state.

Objectives of the Study

1. To determine the prevalence of hypertension among adults in Bauchi State.

2. To identify the major risk factors contributing to hypertension in Bauchi State.

3. To assess the level of awareness and preventive measures taken by residents to manage hypertension.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of hypertension among adults in Bauchi State?

2. What are the key risk factors associated with hypertension in Bauchi State?

3. What strategies are currently employed by residents to prevent and manage hypertension?

Research Hypotheses

1. The prevalence of hypertension in Bauchi State is significantly high due to undiagnosed cases.

2. Poor dietary habits, obesity, and physical inactivity are major contributors to hypertension in Bauchi State.

3. Increased awareness and lifestyle modifications will significantly reduce hypertension prevalence in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on adult populations in Bauchi State, including urban, semi-urban, and rural areas, to determine hypertension prevalence and risk factors. Limitations may include self-reported biases in dietary and lifestyle data, challenges in obtaining accurate medical records, and limited participation due to cultural beliefs about medical testing.

Definitions of Terms

• Hypertension: A chronic medical condition characterized by persistently high blood pressure.

• Prevalence: The proportion of a population affected by a particular disease at a given time.

• Risk Factors: Behaviors or conditions that increase the likelihood of developing a disease.
