Background of the Study

Food insecurity remains a pressing challenge in Nigeria, with millions of people facing insufficient access to nutritious food. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines food insecurity as a situation in which people lack stable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life (FAO, 2023). In Kaduna State, a combination of factors, including economic instability, climate change, and insecurity, has contributed to the worsening food crisis, leading to widespread undernutrition, especially among children and vulnerable populations.

Kaduna State, located in northwestern Nigeria, is one of the most agriculturally active regions in the country. However, despite its agricultural potential, a significant portion of the population suffers from food insecurity due to persistent poverty, conflicts between farmers and herders, and fluctuating food prices (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, environmental challenges such as droughts and flooding further disrupt food production and availability. As a result, the state has recorded high rates of malnutrition, particularly among children under the age of five.

Undernutrition manifests in various forms, including stunting (low height-for-age), wasting (low weight-for-height), and micronutrient deficiencies, which have long-term consequences on physical and cognitive development (Ogunjimi et al., 2023). Studies have shown that food insecurity not only affects individuals' health but also contributes to lower productivity, increased healthcare costs, and reduced economic growth (FAO, 2023). Despite government efforts and international interventions to address food insecurity in Nigeria, progress has been slow, necessitating an in-depth analysis of the underlying causes and potential solutions.

This study seeks to critically assess food insecurity in Kaduna State and its impact on undernutrition, identifying key factors contributing to the crisis and proposing effective strategies for mitigating its effects.

Statement of the Problem

Food insecurity is a critical issue in Kaduna State, affecting thousands of households and contributing significantly to the high prevalence of undernutrition. Despite various agricultural and food intervention programs, many families still struggle to access sufficient and nutritious food, leading to severe health consequences, particularly for children and pregnant women (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2024). Malnutrition remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children under five in Kaduna State, with stunting and wasting rates exceeding national averages.

The interplay of socio-economic factors, including unemployment, poverty, and food price volatility, exacerbates the food insecurity crisis. Additionally, insecurity caused by armed conflicts and banditry has displaced many farming communities, reducing agricultural productivity and limiting food supply (Ogunjimi et al., 2023). Although government agencies and international organizations have launched several food security initiatives, their impact remains insufficient due to poor implementation, corruption, and logistical challenges.

Given these realities, there is an urgent need to conduct an in-depth assessment of the food insecurity situation in Kaduna State to understand its impact on undernutrition and identify feasible interventions to improve food access and nutrition outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the prevalence and causes of food insecurity in Kaduna State.

2. To examine the impact of food insecurity on undernutrition among children and vulnerable populations in Kaduna State.

3. To assess the effectiveness of existing food security interventions and policies in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. What are the main causes of food insecurity in Kaduna State?

2. How does food insecurity contribute to undernutrition among children and vulnerable populations in Kaduna State?

3. How effective are existing policies and interventions in addressing food insecurity and undernutrition in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between food insecurity and undernutrition in Kaduna State.

2. Children in food-insecure households are more likely to experience stunting and wasting.

3. Government interventions on food security have not significantly reduced the prevalence of undernutrition in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on food insecurity and its impact on undernutrition in Kaduna State, examining its prevalence, causes, and consequences. Data will be collected from rural and urban households, healthcare facilities, and relevant government agencies. The study will also evaluate ongoing food security programs and their effectiveness in addressing undernutrition.

Limitations of the study may include difficulties in accessing some conflict-affected areas, reliance on self-reported data, and limited availability of recent government statistics on food security.

Definitions of Terms

• Food Insecurity: The lack of stable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet dietary needs for an active and healthy life.

• Undernutrition: A condition resulting from insufficient intake of energy and nutrients, leading to stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies.

• Stunting: A condition in which children have low height-for-age due to chronic malnutrition.

• Wasting: A condition in which children have low weight-for-height due to acute malnutrition.
