Background of the Study

Rabies is a fatal viral disease transmitted primarily through the bite of infected animals, with dogs being the main reservoirs (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). The disease poses a serious public health threat in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where dog vaccination rates are low and access to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is limited (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024). Rabies is almost 100% fatal once symptoms appear, making early intervention critical for disease control (Aliyu & Garba, 2024).

Bauchi State, with its large population of stray dogs and limited veterinary services, remains highly vulnerable to rabies outbreaks (Usman et al., 2024). Reports indicate an increasing number of rabies-related deaths due to inadequate public awareness, poor surveillance systems, and weak enforcement of animal vaccination programs. Despite existing control measures, rabies remains a persistent problem, necessitating further research into its epidemiology and prevention strategies.

This study aims to evaluate the epidemiological trends of rabies in Bauchi State and assess the effectiveness of current control measures.

Statement of the Problem

Rabies remains a neglected tropical disease in Nigeria, with Bauchi State being one of the most affected regions (NCDC, 2024). The persistence of rabies cases despite control efforts indicates gaps in disease surveillance, vaccination coverage, and post-exposure treatment availability (Ogunleye et al., 2024). Many residents lack knowledge about rabies prevention, increasing the risk of human infections following dog bites.

The lack of comprehensive data on rabies epidemiology in Bauchi State makes it difficult to implement targeted interventions. This study will bridge this gap by assessing rabies prevalence, identifying control challenges, and recommending effective prevention strategies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To analyze the epidemiological trends of rabies in Bauchi State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing rabies control measures, including dog vaccination and public awareness campaigns.

3. To identify challenges hindering rabies prevention and propose solutions.

Research Questions

1. What are the epidemiological trends of rabies in Bauchi State?

2. How effective are current rabies control measures in the state?

3. What are the major challenges in rabies prevention and control?

Research Hypotheses

1. The prevalence of rabies in Bauchi State is influenced by low dog vaccination rates.

2. Public awareness and education campaigns significantly impact rabies prevention.

3. Strengthening surveillance and control measures can reduce rabies incidence in the state.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on rabies cases reported in Bauchi State, examining disease incidence, vaccination efforts, and control strategies. Limitations may include underreporting of rabies cases and difficulties in accessing veterinary data.

Definitions of Terms

• Rabies – A viral disease affecting the central nervous system, transmitted through the bite of infected animals.

• Epidemiology – The study of disease patterns, causes, and effects in a specific population.

• Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) – A series of rabies vaccinations given after potential exposure to prevent the onset of the disease.
